Intel banner resolution?

I had posted about the Intel banner problem early last week, but nothing has been done, nor have I received any feedback from any moderators. A couple other people echoed my findings that pages that had the Intel banner were displaying only on x486 or wintel soultions.

Can I get a response from a mod on this?

There used to be a comment (rule?) in this forum about bumping messages and expecting replies. I don't know if it was changed or over-looked when the new FAQ was posted. Basically it said no bumping threads and don't expect to get a reply. That may be why you're not getting any replies.
 
No problems using Opera on Solaris 8, I am happy to report.
Unfortunately using Netscape Communicator 4.76 still gives the same problems as previous couple of weeks.

Edit: Mozilla works too. I don't know why I didn't think to try other browsers last week. 😱
I can't seem to stay logged in with Opera though.

Opera....Cringe

It's bad enough I have to use netscape at work. Anyone know of any plugins for mozilla netscape 4.76 that will disable banners?

Not that it would be your fault but if that rule was for real it would be absolutely stupid. Why even have this particular forum if you are unable to make sure that is seen by an admin? Why should we not expect to be replied to? Even if we are not subscribers our page views are adding to the coffers...

Anyways, I am on an HP B2600 HPUX 10.xx machine and I have been struggling with the frigging Intel adds for the past two weeks. I am getting frustrated with them. Why hasn't something been done about them yet? Isn't it about time to take the Intel ads out of the banner rotation? :| :| :| :|
 
have you tried adding that banner to your hosts file??

add the hostname of the server it's on to the file


in win2k/winxp it's in c:\win??\system32\drivers\etc

unix machines should have the same file too, probably in /etc but I am not sure...


 
Okay, so you didn't like my post last time around 'cuz I'm a subscriber, fine, I can accept that.

But one thing you're gonna need to understand is that not every problem that's reported here is going to be addressed. Okay, so a few people have commented that the Intel banner is a problem - point is, there's only a few noticing it, or having enough problems with it to justify making some noise about it. Point is, given the HUGE number of users here who are NOT reporting a problem, the Mods probably have better things to do for the masses.

Besides which, you're not the only one(s) with this type of problem - I happen to have a very occasional problem in the PM section where a padlock appears next to the users in my Buddy List - when it's in place I can't PM the person or recieve PMs from them. I've found that if I delete them out of the list and then add them back in, the padlock goes away. 🙂 Again, the issue is that only a very few others besides myself have noticed this problem, but in the grand scheme of things it's just not an issue worth addressing given the number of users who aren't having any such problem. I'm a subscriber and I can accept this.

Personally, I feel that those not subscribing have less of a leg to stand on in asking for support, but that's my own two cents. Others have posted possible solutions for you to try - perhaps the Mods are waiting for you to report on the effectiveness of those solutions. 😉


 
I had this same problem with netscape 4.79 on redhat 7.2 on an x86 machine. I also have the problem in ie6, winXP on a duron 1200. The banner will load, but not the rest of the page. I have to shift f5 until it hits a different banner. It does it almost all the time in linux, and most of the time in windows, but not always. I have no problem with the red one, or the tigerdirect one.

I personally disagree with that 😛.

The reason there is no special recognition of subscribers (custom ranks, avatars, etc) is because subscribing does not give you any special rights as a member of this board, and it does not make you a better member than anyone else... that is why moderators do not know if a given person is a subscriber, if that person breaks the rules they get the boot just like anyone else.

I also think it's immature to say things like "I WAS going to subscribe, but because the mods wont fix this now I won't" or "I wont be renewing my subscription until this problem is fixed". A subscription is not something to use as a threat.... If you don't want to subscribe because of how something is handled, don't subscribe.. the mods will lose no sleep over it....

The way I see it, is there are two reasons to subscribe.

a = You want the forums to be faster, higher PM limit, etc.
b = You want to support the forums because you value them.

if a = true or b = true or a & b = true, then by all means subscribe

but if your only reason to subscribe is to try to get what you want, or to be able to make threats, then don't subscribe because Anand doesn't need your money, and I'm sure he doesn't want it.

hmmm, well, its not a subscriber issue is it? It's a non-subscriber issue. I do the F5 trick to get a different banner or I open in a new page a few times til it loads.... Kindof a bummer and limiting in making me want to go elsewhere. I cant imagine newbies that surf past want to even stick around if/when this problem occurs. If this is a tool to try to get people to subscribe, I believe it may have the opposite effect.

I don't think they would do that to gain subscribers. I think it is more apathythan anything. Regardless, I have given up if the mods cared at all they would have done something or at the very least given some indication
that they knew of the problem. I've tried al the hints and tweeks in this thread to no avail, except for the one where you put the banner ad in the host file(have no idea how to place anything other than an ip there)

Regardless, I have given up and don't care anymore. I will post on the rare occasions that I can get a page to load. But, I will continue to post elsewhere the majority because it is quite obvious that nothing is going to be done because we are as networkman eloquently put it inconsequential in the eyes of the mods
 
If these forums are full of technical experts, why is it they can't even give a basic explanation. Like... it's the ad placers fault, the code is bad, it's a money issue and we don't care, anything. Though it appears to be mostly Netscape related, a friend of mine has issues with the great IE also.

It's quite obvious to both the technical expert mod and myself that there is obviously some bad jscript in the ad that does not like to exist with Netscape. However, intel has paid their money to have the ad placed. Options to fix include replacing the intel banner with another intel banner, analyzing the code in the banner and fixing.

This will not be fixed because (A) Intel is never wrong and they are Gods
(B) It's clients are subservient and never right.
As long as you agree with points A and B then you will remain in good standing with Intel.
