Intel ATA storage Driver

I'm running an Asus TUSL2 815E chipset, ATA100 with an IBM Deskstar 60GXP 20GB.

When running the Mobo CD one of the options was to install the Intel ATA Storage driver.
(INF files for the chipset were installed separately).


Is the ATA driver necessary for 815E chipset mobos or does it just "enhance performance?"
I'm having issues with windows (98SE and 2000) failing to boot after a few days of good running, and I'm troubleshooting
everything I can find. Any info about ATA storage driver?

I'm running an Asus CUSL2-c 815E chipset, ATA100 on my board same as yours the Intel ATA Storage driver is included in the inf update and installing the ata storage driver on top of that caused me to reformat my harddrive as you will notice the driver is installed in the inf update. so if you instal the ata storage update you are effectively updating the inf update and it crashed the he... out of my clean format lol

since the driver is installed with the update the answer is yes it does help but do not update the ata storage driver again or performance will suffer relentlessly lol

are you running the norton anti virus crap as that usually causes me the most grief on mine?

try turning off "msconfig"( last tab) any programs in the background or better yet reload (reformat) and only load what is absolutely necessary then let it run a couple of days if no problems add a few more programs repeat the process wait few days then try a few more and see if it resurfaces also keep track of the programs loaded as a test bed to find the culprit but you may find the msconfig and turning off unnecessary programs from the stars menu solves it also

these things can be hard to track but when you find the program get rid of it and volla stability returns lol

edit the cusl2 and tusl2 are very similar except you have tulatin support and i dont !

The ATA storage driver is optional. You don't need to install it. If you are going to use it, there is an updated version called Intel Application Accelerator which is @ version 2.

Hardwareaddict, that's about it. This system is causing me much grief and I have had to reformat several times...🙁

My other computer only has ata33 onboard, but I have a promise ata66 card so I thought the storage driver was something along those lines. I started getting really confused when I couldn't get the darn storage driver to install correctly, but now it makes much sense.

Norton was being used for a while after the storage driver was installed, and I suspect it had a hand in things. But I just suspect, I don't have any real answers. 🙂

I've been trying the reformat/load/troubleshoot for a while, but I'm also trying to decide if I have bad hardware somewhere (HD, RAM, Mobo) since I have the same problem in win98 and in 2000.

I found on my CUSL2-C I HAD to install the ATA storage driver, if your PC is working fine without it, so be it. if it's working like crap, install the ATA driver.

I would get BSOD's when downloading off the internet about not being able to write to the disk, putting the driver on eliminated that problem forever.. it never happened again!

actually i love this mobo best dang thing ive spent my money on mobo wise

it overclocks nicely for my old 866 🙂

ok mine even though you are asking yeild are maxtor 40 gig at the moment 7200 rpm
ata 100 win xp pro /win 98 dual boot😉


i have run the driver as stated but it installs automaticly with the inf but one thing i remember was this the ata storage driver had a pre load screen on mine where you could change different things like dma but i only saw it once?

another thing sometimes the files are fubared on cd's drivers has happened to me twice and you may try downloading the actual drivers from asus site?

also does scandisk.exe give any indication of any harddrive errors? or offer to fix any reports wrong size partitions?

as stated i havent experienced any problems but 98 2000 boot how are you set up?

i put 2 partitions on 1 drive c is active d is for 98 and c for xp

just in case that helps um specs are p-3 866 cusl2-c 512 ram 40 gig hdd maxtor other hdd is outright now for file transfers and backups she is over clocked to 975? i believe not sure as i was playing earlier ati all in one rage 128 and sblive nic modem dvd cdrw and i think thats it

I had a CUSL2 for quite awhile and ran Win98, then 2K. You do not need the storage driver. Your system will run 100% fine without it. You have to enable DMA in Win98 via the normal method, the same with Win2K. If you want to use the Intel ATA storage drivers instead the the Microsoft version, you should use the new IAA version 2 drivers.

Scandisk reported a couple things like bad FAT and lost clusters a few times, but after some more looking over it looks like it's bad RAM and not Bad Harddrive...

So you know it was using either win98 or 2000...Didn't try dual booting while it was being problematic.

Though I do have 98 and 2000 dual-booted on my p3 500, 256MB, One 40GB IBM deskstar 60gxp ATA100 (only running 66, however), one 13.6 deskstar 7200 Ata 66. Nvidia Riva TNT2, 3com ethernet, 6x32x ToshibaDVD, 4xCDr, SbLive5.1. Gateway made it so I think it's some Intel mobo, never bothered to find out. 🙂 This one runs just fine.

I've got some other things to try out with the 933, so I'll let you know if I find anything about IAA

it was a maxtor diamondmax 60+ 30GB 7200 RPM drive.. ATA/100.

i was running 98 at the time, and in the first night of a fresh install i was forced into installing the drivers.

850 chipset here, and I think both use the same MCH. 3Dmark2K1 crashed at the same place every time without the ATA drivers (Intel board, CPU, GF3, everything you could consider stable), so I suggest you install them.
