Hmm... A P4 weighs 19 grams, while an A64/FX weighs 45 grams. Looks like Intel has the Instructions Per Gram crown for now.

Right now I'm building an A64 3200 (2000mhz) rig and suspect it will beat my P4 at 3.6...
And based on the reviews, I suspect it won't.

(and that's using 32bit OS)
A 64-bit OS won't do very much without 64-bit apps. And then just by being 64-bit, apps won't benefit much either unless it has need for 64-bit integer operations or requires lots of memory.

I'll put my 2.4C@3.4 up against yours 😉

Thorin

You missed my point entirely. That "90% share of the market" you keep mentioning is meaningless because we're effectively talking about an entirely different platform from the current standard.

Edit: A third standard is entirely within the realm of possibility. All I'm saying is that MS is in the drivers seat on this issue more-so than Intel. W/o MS support a third architecture would be nearly useless.
No I didn't miss your point...I simply completely disagree with it. The 90% (that was your or someone else's number to start with BTW) is Joe Average who has NFC what's going on in the industry and is lead around by the balls by Intel. So if Intel decides on a 3rd 64bit IA then Joe Average is still gonna go with Intel (because they don't understand or "see" any other option, ie: AMD, whoever). Despite any big talk they wanna make MS can't afford to turn their back on even a small fraction of the market (hence they've suported Alpha (historically), IA64, x86-64, etc.... even though they only represent perhaps 15% or less of the market), if they could afford to tell off or give up one of those potential revenue streams then they alread would have.

You make a lot of good points. But I've just got to be the devil's advocate on this one. Two competing home/work PC standards can only hurt the industry (especially AMD, but also as a whole) and MS could nip this right now.
Joe recognizes the "Pentium" name, no question about that. But he also likes using Windows. In the end I think Joe would rather have a "Brand X" processor running Windows than a PentiumV running Lindows64. It might mean a wait in the return line at Best Buy to figure it out, but I think people want to be able to use Windows more than just to know they've got "Intel Inside". That's why MS has the potential to be in charge if they feel like it.

Are you sure? The 3.6GHz is also out of a 2.4C...
