Because of the recent hype of the AMDs, I haven't been paying attention to any processors that have been coming out of intel. I remember a suggestion to get an Intel 930 or 940(cant remember)because it has the same performance of an AMD X2 3800+ and is cheaper. Is this true? I see that it is cheaper, but what about for gaming? If it is true, then can anyone recommend a processor and a good motherboard? I plan to overclock if anyone can lead me to a good intel guide.

This question has been beaten to death.....The 930-940 are quite comparable...not as much savings as you think, and if you go ocing route any price advantage you had with the INtel chip may be negated.....

Many Intel users have shown if you get the 3800+ to 2.6ghz it will take 4ghz P-D to equal it....

As always YMMV (your mileage may vary) when it comes to ocing...

so basically stock reports show in gaming the 3800+ is definitely better then the 930 and often as good as the 955...

plus, find a nice 06xx 3800+ and 2.6-2.8ghz+ should be a sleepwalk

Actually the 805 might be the best bang for the buck, to compete pricewise with the 3800.

The 805 is great performance for dollar. If you are running a stock machine, you can make an 805 machine that is significantly cheaper than an X2 3800+ machine with performance differences being much less than the difference in cash. If you want to overclock, most of them can hit 4Ghz on good air cooling. However, when overclocking the value goes down in comparison to the X2. An Athlon 64 X2 3800+ can get to 2.5-2.6Ghz on stock cooling and at that speed, it would be moderately competitive with the 4Ghz Pentium D. However, to get the Pentium D to 4Ghz, you have to get a nice air cooler and an expensive mainboard, which deteriorates the price difference to the point where you might as well have gotten an X2 3800+.

If the OP can afford it, I would suggest an Athlon 64 X2 over any Pentium D. The ONLY reason to buy a Pentium D is if you need a dual core and cannot afford an X2.
