Intel 6750 overclocking advice requested

Somewhat of an overclocking newb...first, my setup

Intel C2D e6750
Abit IP35 Pro
Tuniq Tower 120
2GB Crucial DDR2 800 memory
Seasonic 550w PS
8800 GTS 320mb
XP
P-182 case

Anyway, when I first got this setup, I was able to overclock to 3.4 with ease (8*425). Temps seemed to hover in the high 30s/low 40s, maybe low 50s under Orthos load. Did this all stock...didn't change a thing in the BIOS other than the FSB and setting the RAM to 1:1. For awhile I figured that was good enough, but now I want to see if I can push it a little more. I went to 3.6 stock, but Orthos failed after a couple minutes. After doing some reading here, I figured I needed to up the voltage. Went to 1.40, same results. Went to 1.42 and the computer wouldn't POST.

Soooo...what would be my next step here? Am I at my ceiling? Would something with the RAM keep it from posting? I just figured my failure point would be more gradual...I seem to be cruising along and just hit a brick wall if I try to go a tad higher.

Also, I am having to leave SpeedStep off. While playing EQ2 (which is a CPU dependent game..and while it doesn't utilize dual core, it seems to still stress modern PCs), I notice it doesn't ramp up the speed to 3.4. I can see an FPS difference because of this. Is it a big deal leaving speedstep off? Is there maybe some software utility that I can easily disable it when I am playing, but have it active otherwise?

Gotta release the ram settings from 1:1, gotta use a different divider so you're ram runs a little slower, could also losen the ram timings which might help. Besides, you might wanna push up the voltage on the NB a little as well. Like 0.05 or 0.1 extra.

Btw, kinda offtopic, but how you liking the case? I just ordered one and I can't wait for it to arrive. Only worry I have is my PSU cables not being long enough.

I like the case a lot. My MB cable was not enough to go around the back...barely reached keeping it in front. Took awhile to get everything in place, but it's worth it. I love the look of it and it's quiet.

Thanks for the advice, I will give it a shot.

How do you use a RAM divider in Abit's BIOS? The lowest option seems to be 1:1...everything else is higher and overclocking the RAM.

P35 will only support 1:1 divider. That's why you should alway stick with a 9x or higher CPU if you plan to overclock. Quality DDR2 800 modules can hit +450MHz with 2.1Vdimm.

P35 only does 1:1, for real? Jeez that just plain sucks... Then you've gotten loosen up the ram timings mate, to 5-5-5-15 and give 0.1 or 0.2v more to the ram. That way it should indeed overclock to 450mhz.

I couldn't get mine over 8x400 at stock, you're doing great. My system is nearly identical to yours (check my sig). I am currently running 1.52 vcore in bios, mch 1.52, vtt 1.31, ich 1.05, ichio 1.65, cpu gtlref 1&3 67%, cpu gtlref 0&2 67%, ddr2 2.2 (1066 ram is rated at 2.2 stock). I'm at 8x439. I have trouble posting between 8x440 and 8x450, but I can adjust it just fine in uGuru. In fact, I would recommend doing all fine-tuning in uGuru since it adjusts the bios defaults for you. Try my settings at 3.512 first, but I would be surprised if you can't get 3.6+ with the same settings. My chip runs 2xseti at 51c 24/7, it is a few C higher on orthos.
