Intel 510 or OCZ RevoDrive X2

I'm looking to get a new SSD drive and am debating between the Intel 510 (250gb) for $615 on Newegg or the RevoDrive X2 (240gb) for $570. Or should I just wait a month for the Vertex 3... decisions...decisions. What would you guys do?

Out of curiosity, why do you need a 250gb SSD? Seems like most people on here only use them for OS and few apps they use frequently. Please don't be offended by my question. I am honestly wondering this as I am a noob when it comes to SSDs.

Thank You.

If someone with a 160gb drive (Intel g2) can be of help here - I've several rather large IDEs with servers/dbs on it as well as a VM and my steam folder (only games I'm playing or are likely to play in the next time; other games are copied on the hard drive and just copied back when necessary) and it's just nice to not have to worry about a few gig here or a few gig there. And all in all a SSD isn't that expensive when compared to other hobbies and it's not something you've got to replace every year.

b2t:I'd personally either wait for some new SF drives or try find some cheap last gen drives - the 510 really isn't that amazing. But then it depends on your needs..

Money isn't really a concern for me but rather performance. I want the 250gb because I tend to install a lot of games and do a lot with VMs, and I want to reduce load times.

What if you had to pick between the RevoDrive X2 or the Intel 510? I don't know if I really want to wait for the Vertex 3. I'm thinking I'll get either the Intel 510 or the RevoDrive X2 now and then also get the Vertex 3 when it comes out and move the other drive to my second machine.

If you get lucky enough, Newegg might have an awesome sale again (but don't hold your breath for it). That's the only reason why I got a 256GB C300 for $400.

I don't think the new drives offer that much of a difference when price is considered.

Another reason for a SSD larger than just what's needed for OS & apps is to put one in a notebook. Cannot carry around lots of data files, much less movies or games, on a 60GB SSD. For the record, I still use a 500GB 7200 rpm HDD in my notebook, but would love to be able to "upgrade" to an SSD for even half that size. At current prices, that is not even a remote possibility.

Crucial C300 256gb, and call it a day.

Seriously speaking... i was in your shoes, and thats the route i did and called it a day.

You can get the C300's for a good price right now if you look around.
And there not that much slower then the 25nm SSD's.

Areca SAS controller + C300's on Raid.

What did i do?
I have 3 intel's in Raid0 for OS, and the C300 256gb to hold all my games in a nice little rack like this:

Instead of a Revodrive X2, you could just buy a LSI SAS2008 based card, run RAID 0 and buy 4 individual 64GB drives and get more performance for less money... if you really wanted.

i'm not sure why anyone buys the revodrive over a raid controller and some drives. the drives will be much easier to move down the line if anything happens. the revodrive is guaranteed to work and may require less fiddling than a DIY solution. that's literally the only thing it has going for it. revodrive is a lot less impressive when you realize it's just a raid connecting to some sata controllers running off a pcie slot (with pcix in between). not a native pcie ssd controller.

nice... what size are the Intel SSDs?

he is saying money is not that big of an issue and he likes not worrying about every gig. plus the bigger the SSD the faster it is. Very few people NEED an SSD (military/financial/medical uses)... most of us WANT an SSD and are willing & able to pay the premium... for many a 300$ difference for a few percent performance delta is a big deal, for many it isn't.

op: did you read the anandtech review of both of these drives?

I am having tough time deciding now and I am in exact same profile as the OP: not really needing 240-256 - but kinda wanting it mostly for steam folder..😉

I suppose i could do ok with a 160... but I digress.

As I'm reading through all these reviews I kinda came to the C300 call myself:

-Intel 510 has that reliability thing going for it. I feel "safer" about the SSD. Read performance not really all that different from previous gen though so, I dunno, is it worth it? Its also like, 30 bones more expensive than the preorder price for Vertex 3s, and over 100 on the C300/

- Vertex 3. To be honest I am strongly considering this. My aim for the SSD purchase was to connect it at 3gbps now, but when I go to new intel architecture in 2012, have this latent performance sitting there that will "turn on" when I hook it up to the new mobo. Seems like top performer and right now, only 60 bones more expensive than C300 on NCIX. But. I do have a little bit of a worry of jumping in on first batch.

-C300. When i went back through anandtech reviews I saw this guy sitting there in 2nd or 3rd place all over the benches. And I thought to myself. Shit, am I really going to be able to tell the difference between the C300 and the vertex 3 when I use my computer? Probably not. It has the Sata 3 for a little boost next year, and its been out a while. I heard of issues with first batch, but I expect the product is pretty damn solid now.

Im looking to make the jump int he next 2-3 weeks. And its the only slightly less performance for cheaper and the "not first batch of new product line" thing thats having me thinking of jumping on that.

But i see it at 514 on NCIX right now... im hoping there might be some kind of deal soon...

(PS those are canadian $$)

I know... The Revo is just easier to set up, and you don't have to take up 4 drive bays.

You can do that with an on-board RAID for that matter..but it chews up your available SATA ports and drive bays. Of the two options in the OP, I'd go for the single larger drive. C300 might well be enough performance-wise too.

5.12tb - or about 20 256gb drives if they just raided them together. I think we're more in the ballpark of two or three fortunes there 😉

I would bet between $10K and $12K. Sure thats a lot but we are talking about 5.12TB of storage that is almost as fast as DDR2 RAM. Yea, I would be happy with that for the next 5-10 years.

Hardly. First we have to consider overprovisioning, they surely have about 30%, while consumer ssds have about 7%. So that alone brings us to ~25 256gb SSDs.

Newegg prices for the c300 256gb goes for about 500$, so that alone brings us to 12.5k$. But then they're hopefully using SLC which inflates the price a good bit more (hard to say how much). And now we've still got to include the premium for business users and world class performance.

You could be happy if you get one for 30k$ I'd wager.

They are using MLC on this one. Their other lines they use SLC. Don't ask me why. I don't know about $30k, but you do make valid points. I would raise my estimate to about $20K then (since not using SLC)

They have SLC and MLC models in just about everything they offer. The smaller sizes in the DUO line are in the $10k range, so you can bet those Octals are close to 6 figures each.
