Intel 3258 issue

When loading a youtube video playlist (music videos) on my secondary monitor then loading StarCraft 2, it basically locks up the computer.

System is:
MSI Z87, 16 Gb ram (2x8), AMD 290x, 240 SSD.

I bought the Intel 3258 as a toy CPU as I already had extra ram, extra 290x from mining fun laying around. I know SC2 is a pretty demanding load for CPU but did not think it would CRAWL with doing both.

My 4770k of course has zero issues with same setup.

The CPU handles SC2 fine by itself. Plays Dishonored fine as well. Been working to much this past month to really test much else.

BTW is it overclocked to 3.8 Ghz (was higher but like lower volts)

Yes both monitors are connected to the 290x via DVI. Secondary monitor is 1920x1080, main is 2560 x1440 with DVD-D.

Interesting info. I wouldn't doubt you are maxing out the CPU doing this. Have you tried leaving Task Manager open on the Performance tab while this is happening?

It was lagging/unplayable even overclocked to 4.3.

This PC is just a toy, my main 4770k water cooled is the main rig. The 3258 is my third PC.

With task manager open it does stay close to 100% on both cores when playing SC2.

I don't think anyone in their right mind would spec a non-HT dual core for that kind of use, still when you say it locks up the machine it seems indicative of some other problem.

Sadly my daughters Ivy bridge celeron 1610 works better at multiple tasks... I have swapped out the ram, updated bio, the SSD was fine when in my other system (fresh OS install).

On paper and reviews the Intel 3258 should walk all over my daughters 1610...

Off next three days so will test more then.

If you are saying a 1610 works better than a G3258, you are either yanking our collective chains, or something is wrong with your third PC.

Yeah I was exaggerating.

The Intel 3258 is better, guess my 4770k spoiled me!

Guess X99 platform for next toy?

But now she'll be able to play Diablo 3 on medium settings! 😀

(On a serious note- is D3 not a little mature for an 8 year old?)

I don't believe in censorship. However she only plays story mode in the first area. So basically she doesn't see any of the dark elements outside of zombie killing.

I will try the drivers, thanks!
