Intel 3.4GHZ or AMD64 3200+

which is faster? Im getting both for about the same board and would pair them up with an Asus P4C800 or MSI K8T Neo Platinum

Mainly for gaming.
And will I notice a significant difference from my barton 2500+ @ 3200+ ?

And im planning to OC with a coolermaster Hynix 6.

And Im getting both for about the same price.
 
ONly even roughly consider the 3.4ghz if it was a northwood in my opinion....If you can get the socket 939 AMD has it will give you some longevity as well as having the dual channel memory controller. In test I have seen a 2ghz 3200+ 90nm beats a 2.2ghz 3200+ newcastle 130nm....
 
if you mainly game and don't require heavy multitasking, the amd is arguably the better value. it will be faster than the intel in most all single tasks.

what about overclocking...The intel is about 20$ cheaper here than the A64.....

i can't really comment on how a 3.4 intel will overclock, but my 3000+/neo2 plat. runs a solid 2.43Ghz (9x270, 1:1 memory, 3x HTT) at stock voltage, which is fx-53/Athlon 4000+ speeds. can't complain at all about that 🙂

You probably want to get the 939 pin version... It will allow for dual channel and all the newer processors are using it, so there will be a better upgrade path...

The P4 3.4 is $272 on newegg and the s939 3200+ is only $203... I would definately go AMD. The A64s are supposedly good overclockers as well, but I don't know anything about the P4s...
 
I just traded my 3000+ and k8n neo plat 754 for a p4 3 gig and abit ai7 . If you are not getting a 939 then go for p4. If you get p4c800 make sure to get the -e version!
 
its a 3.2 btw...

Cant find a 939 where I live or they are ridiculously priced.....

Both are old ... I mean intel has also bought in the 775 pins P4...Should I get that? How is the Asus Pro series?
 
In my opinion stay away from all prescotts...Anything short of 3.5 to 3.6ghz will be clock for clock slower then the northwoods. The will likely run hotter, mobos for prescotts run a bit more, not have much headroom to oc or you need it to just get to comparison with a northwood......
 
your barton isn't that bad I'd wait till you cang et something that will give you a more substantial upgrade.

I have a very simlar setup to yours and I'm not going to upgrade most likely till Athlon 64s are comonly overclocking to 3ghz on air.
