HI All

I just got done building a computer using a retail Intel cpu/fan/heatsink and a Intel 865perll motherboard. The fan is makes a annoying oscillating type noise. It almost sounds like its ticking. I made sure the fan is secure. I even tried to press on the fan supports while the computer was on thinking it might reduce the noise with no success. I checked to make sure the wires were clear. The fan has a Intel logo but it was clearly built by Sanyo. Does Intel package different brands of fans with their retail cpus? Will they replace the fan for me?

thanks

Are you sure the latches are engaged with the bracket on the motherboard? If not, the heatsink won't seat evenly on the cpu when you lock down the clamps. If you're sure it's secured properly, try a zalman "fan mate 1" rpm adjuster. They're available for about $5-7. I run my p4 fan at 2200 rpm. As the temp rises, the rpms gradually increase to 2700. My p4 temperature ranges from 38-52 celcius, and the noise is half the normal level.

sterling, I have a 2.8C retail, the fan's center is covered by the silly hologram so I don't know who made it, but it was always surprisingly quiet. I think either yours is not installed right or is not secure.

HI All

The noise is getting worse. I made sure the fan is clicked on properly. If i undo the clamps will that mess up the thermal tape? What would u guys suggest? What is the chance that the fan is bad? Will Intel replace it?

thanks

You can call Intel customer support, but you will have to wait about 15-20 minutes before a tech is available. The call isn't free. They gave me a hard time when I was trying to get them to replace an older 1.8a, so I gave up. If you can't find a fan mate 1 locally, try nexfan or one of the other online speciality venders. You might find it by typing "fan mate 1" under fans or accessories in pricewatch.

Spin the fan in open air with your finger and make sure none of the blades are hitting the side in any place. I have had a few stock hsf's with this problem over the years, usually a broken support or something. That's the first thing I thought of when you said ticking.

Yes, the Intel retail HSF are like tornado's. Ditch it ASAP for a Zalman 7000al-cu or something else quiet.

I'm sure Intel wouldn't make their own fans. They just buy them from suppliers like AMD does. Intel will replace the fan, but it's not worth your time and money to ship it back to them. I would just buy an aftermarket fan, as suggested the Zalman 7000A is a good bet.
