I may have missed it, but I think the previous deal was for the Microscope and Sound Morpher for $29, not the Movie Camera.

It looks like the camera was first released in October, 2001 at $100, so you are getting an up to date product. I'm not expecting the greatest video quality, but for $30 it's worth it for the kids to experiment with.

I'm wondering if Intel will clear out their Pocket Concert MP3 player at blow out prices. I don't know if they're getting out of that business.

These are EXCELLENT! Great fun!!! My 2 year old loves it - you can leave it in the cradle and it works sort of like a web cam. You can bring it everywhere you don't want to bring your real camera (beach.. etc...)... play with it around the house. Let the kids play with it.

Very good deal... really happy I purchased one.

But the sound morphers blow... :)

We've had all three Intel Play "toys"---the microscope, movie creator, and sound morpher---and the movie creator was the only one that really entertained my kids. Software's a little glitchy on my Athlon system, with the occasional inexplicable lockup, but most days it works as advertised. Definitely worth $29.

If you work for any of many s/w companies which have abilyzer.com affiliation, you can get 10% discount extra by going to shopintel from their sites. I have placed an order with out going through abilyzer and later mentioned to CR about this and they gave me $3 credit.

Intel shipped out of PA so it only took a ~day to get to DC.

Bought one at xmas for my 12 year old son, he hardly uses it (unlike what we expected), although he wanted it to shoot those skateboarding video things that the kids like to do. Still.... I'm considering a 2nd one for my other son.

Does anyone know if you have to use the included software, or can you use other multimedia apps? (I'm not talking about drivers, obviously.) Just ordered one, would like to avoid installing new software if possible.

<< Does it use batteries in stand alone mode? >>

Yes - 4 AAA to use it in standalone mode, no batteries required when connected to the USB port.

<< Also can it use other software? >>

Yes, it looks like a capture device (std scanner/camera) to the other apps.
I use it with windows movie maker. And there is a separate DL app to
xfer stored video/images.
