Insurance claim HELP! (for ANYONE that filled before please help)

Basically I got into an accident last Saturday. No one else was involved (I essentially hit a barrier thanks to the fact that my brake pads where worn out :| )

I did not bother filling a police report because no one else was involved and at the time I thought I could just get a new bumper for $200 + painting = $500 total. Besides I did not want to get a ticket/writ whatever its called for something this minor.

So I went to two places one gave me a quote of $1000 (the forgot to add two things so its actually $1200) and the other gave me a quote of $1300 :frown:. I call Geico today ask them there policy on filling. They essentially said as long as the claim is LESS than $1000 they cannot increase my rates. Now what I did not ask is IF the Deductable was involved (my deduct is $300).

Here is my Dilema should I file? I was planning on replacing my blinkers regardless and had already ordered a set so thats about $100 less. The front headlight is slightly damaged I can leave that in place if I decide to not file its just the rubber around the headlight thats damaged no big deal. Thats where the $100 differnce comes in for the two places that quoted me.

QUESTION: If my claim is less than the $1000 Geico cannot change my rate but I was thinking of swapping to Amex Discover Insurance some time next month can they charge me a HIGHER RATE BECAUSE OF THE CLAIM? I remember when I was filling out insurance forms I was asked if I had ever filled before.

Lastly do I have to file a police claim? In that case I'm guessing the ticket will be what another $100 or so plus an increase in insurance. Anyway please tell me whatever you can 😎

What year and model car do you have (value?)?

You might consider a used (junkyard) bumper and paint-matching the damaged part to save $$$.

Anytime the Insurance (and police) are not involved, the better.

Consult the laws of your state regarding reporting personal property damage. There is usually a 'minimum-damage' required reporting limit.

The cars a 1995 Nissan Maxima. Paid about $9500 for it a year ago so I'm guessing its worth about 8K now.

I have tried looking for a used bumper around here but there doesn't seem to be any locally though I did find some quite a distance away it basically came to nearly the same cost with S&H included. I really do not want to get the police invloved. Any idea where I can check the 'minimum-damage' required reporting limit? I'm guessing that means it will show up on my car title? :|

Really need some help guys.

I am with Geico and there phone reps pretty much suck. Basically I need to report the accident first then they will get a claims rep in touch with me.

Of course you will pay your deductible. Duh, and yes it will count against you as a claim. If you have claims don't plan on switching insurance for at least a year and more like 3.

Should have been more clear on the deducatble part.

Essentially my question was if the total comes to $1300 deductable is $500 = $800 insurance companies end. So the $1000 Geico is talking about is essentially the $800 they will be charged or the amount of the total claim?

Thanks for clearing that up. What if I get a quote from Discover/Amex insurance today and file a claim with Geico tomorrow? Will Discover go back and check my policy or what? Or am I essentially scott free?

A quote and a policy are two different things. Keep in mind that material misrepresentation gives them termination rights at any time.

No, what Gieco is saying is the total claim must be below $1000. Your total claim would be $1300 and would be above that limit. If you only claim $1000 and your deductible is $500 you will only get $500 from them for the damages.
