DUESSELDORF, Germany (Reuters) - A German court on Thursday convicted a businessman of insulting Islam by printing the word "Koran" on toilet paper and offering it to mosques.

The 61-year-old man, identified only as Manfred van H., was given a one-year jail sentence, suspended for five years, and ordered to complete 300 hours of community service, a district court in the western German town of Luedinghausen ruled.

The conviction comes after a Danish newspaper printed cartoons depicting the Prophet Mohammad -- sparking violent protests around the world from Muslims who saw the images as sacrilegious and an attack on their beliefs.

Manfred van H. printed out sheets of toilet paper bearing the word "Koran" shortly after a group of Muslims carried out a series of bomb attacks in London in July 2005. He sent the paper to German television stations, magazines and some 15 mosques.

Prosecutors said that in an accompanying letter Manfred van H. called Islam's holy book a "cookbook for terrorists."

He also offered his toilet paper for sale on the Internet at a price of 4 euros ($4.76) per roll, saying the proceeds would go toward a "memorial to all the victims of Islamic terrorism."

The maximum sentence for insulting religious beliefs under the German criminal code is three years in prison.

I realize that Europe has laws against denying the holocaust, and some countries have rules against nazism - but I didn't realize you can't insult religous groups. I'm glad freedom of speech is alive and well here in the States.

With the reaction to the Danish cartoons, and the United States tendency to follow trends in Europe - do you think we could see simlar laws here?

If anyone can shed some light on these laws I'd appericate it.

The UN is trying ot make it a worldwide crime... Heard about it last week...

That is only because the UN doesn't want to face the real issues or the real truth. The UN is a completely useless body and we need to get out and kick them off US soil.

thats plain wrong, they serve many purposes outside of what people like you think they should be doing ..thats not to say that it couldnt use some improvement..it seems to me like people want the UN to police the world, and yet if it were to come to policing YOUR country then the UN has to back off?

They want the power to set the rules and then expect the US to give them all the money and resources to enforce them

Telling me I cannot draw a religious cartoon should not be something they should waste their time on.. The whackos who riot over this issue should be locked up and prosecuted under the fullest extent of the law.

I don't see what good you do, so yeah, ban you...

You want to put limits on such a fundamental right as the right to freedom of speech based on such a stupid argument?

in fairness, I hear they had a pretty big problem with nazi's about 70 years ago... something about some guy named adolph. /shrug

Who are you referring too?

Any ban on speech that comes about is bad, that goes for 'hate speech' and political correct speech as well. People should have the right to be offensive - i do realize that there can be a grey area when it comes to threating a person (assualt) or a group. But critizing and mocking should ALWAYS be premitted.

I also think it is very dangerous to try and cater to one group, in this case muslims. It was in Denmark, or maybe Norway where i guy was making anti-christian jeans. People may not have been happy with it, but didn't here anyone being thrown in jail or new laws being pass to ban it.

It's pathetic. Then there was some guy recently convicted in Austria over something he said about the holocaust. I find it ironic that these countries are acting with a ridiculously heavy hand--the thought police, in practice--in an attempt to fight things like nazism, which followed a similar trend in its application.

People like me are really pissed that we live in a world where people say things like you just did, oblivious to the patent ignorance of it and what it truly represents. I'll give you a quick illustration: I have a religion that says I have to drive no faster than 55 mph at all times. I then drive to work during rush hour, holding back thousands of people behind me at 55 mph. Please do not say anything against this or my religion, ok? If you do, I want you sent to prison because it offends me.

Cool, so by Germany following an anti-free speech approach they can do just the kind of thing Adolph liked. Great plan! Let's all get on board and nobody say anything bad about any religion. We can all wear brown shorts and grow little mustaches, too.

Critisism is one thing, that I obviously support. There are some forum policies here as well that "limit" freedom of speech, but Im sure you dont think its unfair. IMO insulting religions = racism, just a different form.

Yes but its a private forum and we abide by the rules if we dont' watn to get banned or locked. Its a much different issue when a govermental body sets the limits on speech.

Where? the southern USA?😛
this whole thing is way the hell out of proportion. yes, cartoons were drawn and religions were insulted, and people were killed. but isn't it time to just learn a lesson from this and move on?

Denmark, where the Mohammed cartoons were first published, has a law providing for fines and up to four months in jail for anyone who "publicly offends or insults a religion that is recognized in the country."

I wonder why the upset parties didn't try to have the cartoonists in question prosecuted under that law?

Maybe they would rather just kill them??

And in the meantime they publish whatever they like about Jews and Christians in their papers. LMAO!! You really think we are stupid, don't you Sultan.
