damn that was awesome!! How do you guys recommend getting better at this? Just listen to any kind of song and try to play along with notes that sound right? I lack music theory knowledge and only know the pentatonic and chromatic scale 😛.

thanks!

yeah just start noodling around and figuring out the 'patterns'

This might sound stupid but at first, it seems like there are way too many options when it comes to deciding what notes to play.. How do you guys decide?! I've tried but it just sounds way off..

Just keep trying. I can't remember how long it took for me to get from "oh, man that note sounds horrible! And so does that one, and that one, ooh, but this one works" to managing to at least keep up.

There's definitely a tangable moment where you're like 'OHHH!' and it all clicks but until then just start making choices. You'll hit notes that just sound foul and know not to use them again. A lot of it is improvising on the pentatonic scale, once you figure that part out you can start going into more exotic choices. Experiment with note bending too, you can add a lot more character to your songs that way

There are groups of notes that go with other notes in scales. These groups convey "moods" in solos.

Absolutely. I was referring to the MAX number of choices. 🙂

What kind of drum set is the drummer on?

I'm not sure to be honest, it's not great but it doesn't suck either (don't know much about drums but that's what the drummers have said)

Cool, thanks. It actually sounds pretty decent in the audio clips.

Live improv is one of the most creatively-releasing, musically satisfying things you can do as a musician. Drummer, here. I did that for about a decade. It's fucking magical.
