Instant Messaging Programs

Hi everyone.

The company that I work for is going to be blocking all POP3/IMAP and I heard that IM programs use the IMAP protocol to communicate. Does anyone know of an IM program that doesn't use the POP3/IMAP protocol?

Thanks!

POP/IMAP is only for email, which means your IM programs are safe. If they start blocking IM's, you probably shouldn't be using it at work anyway 😉. If all else fails and you have the dire need to IM someone, you can use Java versions of AIM/ICQ.

Do you use IM to just chat with people in the office? I use a program called Realpopup at work to chat over the network.

I use IM to chat with people in the office and outside the office. I'm not worry about the people in the office as I'm assuming that will work since it won't have to go through the firewall, it is the people outside the office that I'm concern about.

How would using a Java version of AIM be a work around? Won't it sill have to use the same protocol or at least the same port?

There's the online version of AIM that you can use from the AOL AIM website.
