Instant Messaging/Chating ...-

- with Windows XP.

Does anyone know exactly how to do this. I am looking for a way that wouldn't require the internet, only the LAN.
Pointing me to the Help file would be enough. I just need to know if this is possible with whatever comes with WinXP, or if I need to look for a third party program. And which one?

That's what I was thinking also. There are a few OSS servers, a few popular clients. Works with both Linux and Windows. Some free versions, some commercial, some propriatory. Stuff like that.

The only problem I see with Jabber is that it works via the internet, instead of LAN 🙁
Do you know another one that would not work in the internet?

jabber can be hosted local, without internet. Just build your own server.

Check out jabber, it can do just what you want. Look at the server side software instead of just the clients.

Trillian Pro has implemented some apple chat protocal that doesn't require a server. I think its called rendezvous. We use it here, works great, people show up as username@computername.

By the way, Exchange Server 2000 has a built in Instant Messaging server. It was removed from Exchange Server 2003, though, and must be purchased separately (if you are not using Exchange 2000).
