Installing X2 Drivers

There seems to be a ton of confusion on this issue. I have read multiple forums where solutions are pointing to registry edits along with boot.ini changes etc etc. There is also info on a 'hotfix' from microsoft which has not been released yet. IMO, this is some shady stuff and I do not want to deal with it.

If someone can clarify if this is the correct order of installation I would really appreciate it:
Epox EP-9NPA3ULTRA
X2 3800
Win XP Professional
Geforce 7800

-Install win xp sp 2
-Do windows update
-Install Nvidia Nforce platform drivers
-Install Nvidia Video drivers
-Install AMD Dual core driver/fix

That's what order I went in. Then I installed the MS hotfix, there's a huge thread about it, just search for dual core patch. I then did the registry change. No problems in regular XP pro or MCE. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find a patch for x64 and I have problems in games with it.

So i need to install the MS 'beta' hotfix and do a registry edit? What a bunch of bulls*(*!!! Why doesnt AMD/MS fix this? I should NOT have to go f-ing around in the registry just to get a freshly installed machine to run correctly.

BTW, I did see the thread from a few months but I thought (and hoped) the info was a little dated.

I wish the info was dated, but I had to do it on a fresh build. For what it's worth, my Pentium D didn't need any of this.

You only need to install the MS hotfix if the dual core AMD driver still does not resolve stuttering issues in games. If your games dont hitch and pause to begin with, then you dont even need the AMD driver. WindowsXP is fully capable of utilizing both cores without an additional driver.

I wish that were the case for me and my X2, but with all three operating systems (XP, XP64 and MCE) I had to install the drivers and the patch. Of course, I never got it working correctly on XP64 because there is no patch that I could find.

Ok, I guess i am going to try a standard windows/driver install and run 3dmark or something and see how I score. If anyone has anymore definative info please let me know.

I run 2K, XP Pro, Xp X64 and Debian........I have not installed any fix this time (I reinstalled on this system when I installed several new pieces of hardware in Feb.) and I have no stuttering or lag in games or anything..........go figure.

I don't think you can do windows update without the Nvidia Nforce Platform drivers installed first b/c of the LAN drivers within it; unless you have a separate PCI Lan card.

You are correct.
As a followup to this thread, I installed as per usual Windows, Nforce driver, Video drivers, then windows update. Everything worked well, tested a few games and ran 3dmark without any problems. So i guess the AMD driver is unneeded for some.
I am also happy with the OC. 2000 -> 2350 mhz on default voltage (1.40), In a few weeks I may try for a little more as it is running at 34C idle and 45C with 2 instances of Prime.
