Installing WinME tonight...installing RoadRunner...anything I need to know?

I'm installing WinME tonight and this is my first reformat/OS install since I got RoadRunner. I wasn't at home when they installed it...

Anything I need to know? How do I do it really? Setting up the IP and connection and sh!t. 🙂

Thanks!

Just install the drivers for your NIC and you will be all set. (Well aside from installing TCP/IP, etc...)

Just thought I would clarify my last post.

There is no settings that you have to adjust to get your internet working. When I installed WinME it detected my NIC and I was able to use my @Home on the first bootup. Good Luck!

once your nic is properly installed, just plug it in, and it should work. I had to reboot my modem (samsung) when I changed computer, so try that if it doesn't work.

WindowsMe is kinda different in the um.....Network Neighborhood deal. It's like a little different but that's the only thing I noticed.

Ok...so just have windoze install the NIC driver and I should be all set...the rest is automatic?

BTW, thanks hubbs for that truly rivetting deposition on how teens speak today...like ummm...mk? 😉 Hehehe, i hate that! :Q

😉

I have RR (DHCP-based) and WinME running. The WinME install automatically detected my 3com NIC so I had to configure *nothing* to get on the 'net. I did eventually go back and get rid of the "Client for Microsoft Networks" in favor of the "Windows Family Logon."

I haven't tried installing any of the RoadRunner software ever. I hope I really don't need it. 🙂

-SUO

Same as SUO here -worked straight off. But then I changed to Win logon and configgered for static 'cause the dynamic server goes down more frequently than the whole system. I also closed NetBIOS for security following the notes at grc.com

Zippy, run winipcfg to get the connection info and use it to fill in the TCP settings for the NIC -specifying an addy etc. You can choose the windows logon from a drop down box ... you'll see. To close port NetBIOS go to http://grc.com/su-rebinding9x.htm

Sorry it would be exhausting to explain what to put where for the static... but it's not too difficult to figger out ... try a google or askjeeves search or sumptink for help if need be... piccies to follow would be handy for ya anyways.

Cool, thanks Auric.

Ask Jeeves didn't help...but if I called up roadrunner do you think they'd help me through it? 😛 I mean WinME still has the same lay out as Win98/Win95 so...🙂 I could probably just say I have Win98se right?

Windows Me is like Windows98te (Third Edition). It is all the same basically except the network niehborhood like I said.

Hubbs, care to elaborate? I don't have a network, just a cable modem (RoadRunner), so would there be anything to set up in there for the cable modem?

Can someone explain how to set up the static IP if you have some time. 🙂

Think the techs at RoadRunner would know what to do in WinME though? If they do, then I should be all set...that is the only reason I posted here. 😛

my computer/control panel/network

go down and double click on tcp/ip -> whatever your network card name is. Don't do anything to tcp/ip -> Dial up Adapter

where is says 'specifiy an ip address' put in the ip you were given.

Thanks rickn. 🙂 Well, I'm gonna low level format overnight and install WinME in da' morning. 😀 Gotta finish making my back ups of data and MP3s tonight though.

Anyone know how to copy MP3s onto CDs...as is. In nero, would I just make a "data CD" instead of an "Audio CD"?

Zippy you will have to problem. I have to go into network neighborhood yo set up a proxy client but if you don't need to do that you should have no trouble. Yeah and to burn the audio onto a cd in data just use data in nero. It usually fits like 120 songs at least.

Yeah, whatever you do don't say you have Win2000 or WinME! They will give you enough flak for setting up static. They would rather you set up for dynamic to make it easier on themselves. That way they don't have to deal with people when their connection "goes down" if the co. actually changes machine addies. If that ever actually happens you just set to dynamic again with a couple clicks and a reboot, snag the new info from winipcfg and set it back to static for reliability. The Network setup is the same so yes just tell 'em you have Win98 if you need to call.

Ok, well, I checked around in Network in the Control Panel...seems I didn't set mine to static...err seems they didn't when I got it installed Jan 31, 2000. It has only been down for two hours since it was installed. 😛 If I wanted to, would I just take the IP that I have that specific boot up and put that as the static IP? Will that create any problems for RoadRunner or myself?

Bump from the dead...
