New pc build now and installed Windows 7 - no issues: i7-4770k, ASUS Maximus VI Hero, 16gigs ram. Now I'm doing the upgrade to Win 8 but just after downloading updates, I get a message that my CPU isn't fast enough.

I'm on the latest Bios 0804 last I checked. Also, I tried upgrading with no overclocking. I'm kinda stumped...

Clean install 8 directly off USB. Fastest and easiest. Windows 8.1 retails for $119 in a few days if you need a key and its the full fat retail version, OEM and upgrades are now gone.

I tried installing directly off of my CD, but my product key is an upgrade only. I bought it back in January when upgrades were $40. Even the upgrade assistant for 8.1 is giving me the same message. I'd hate to spend another $119 and still be stuck :(

I've uninstalled all the ASUS overclocking software and used the manual settings for cpu stock speeds in BIOS, and I still can't get past that message.

Well...decided to just do a complete install of Windows 8. Seems to be working, just kinda a hassle since I'll have to reinstall everything.

The quick and dirty fix is to go to control panel > power management and set the profile to high performance. This prevents windows from downclocking your CPU when idle.

Just remember to reset to balanced when you're done... ;)

I never upgrade anything ESPECIALLY an OS unless you have time to deal with headaches

Antivirus apps are another thing I never uninstall, I simply revert back to a previous image that I've taken using Macrium Reflect, nothing beats a clean install for anything
