Installing Win98 with an USB mouse?

I have a RAzor USB mouse and installed Win98SE without any problems with it. 98SE detects it as a Human Interface Device

thus actually depends....if you are installing from a DOS enviroment, like after a fresh format, then of course a USB mouse won't work untill you get into the actual windows portion.

With a fresh installation of Win 98 and Me, my mouse did not work, I had a Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer USB

honestly i dont recommend the use of a USB mouse if you have to choice to swap it to PS2

PS2 is a dedicated mouse connection supporting up to even 200Hz refresh, supported by nearly ALL operating system, doesnt need to load drivers, neglectable CPU utilisation.

USB is shared connection at 125Hz (cannot be changed i think)refresh, requires drivers for operation, isnt supported by OS other than Win98/2000, (if you run into safemode you need to move your mouse to PS2 anyway), USB eat up cpu like hell

guys please dont use USB mouse
i personally think they arent any reason to use one

Well...when I get my playstation 2, I will be able to use my USB Intellimouse Explorer on it.....not my PS2 mice (<--err...PS2 port that is 🙂 )

usb mouse does not work during installation...
though some BIOSes have an option to enable legacy support which would have a chance of havng the usb mouse work...

<< USB is shared connection at 125Hz (cannot be changed i think)refresh, >>

Who cares? My USB mouse is a lot smoother on the USB port than it ever was on the PS2 port...besides, it frees up an IRQ for more PCI devices 😀

<< requires drivers for operation >>

Doesn't just about any periphial you have in your computer need drivers to run? And my Explorer doesn't need drivers to be installed. I get in Win2k and plug it in and that's it.

<< isnt supported by OS other than Win98/2000 >>

That's because they are the only OS's the properly support USB FULLY. A mouse isn't the only USB item that probably won't work properly on Unix, Linux, etc!! Of course USB devices aren't gonna work on slack ass operating systems who don't implement the standard properly

<< USB eat up cpu like hell >>

Never noticed that, although my processor is 735MHz and it wouldn't phase it anyway

Not pointing out any disadvantages, just pointing out that there is nothing wrong with USB mice. PS2 ports, serial ports, and parallel ports will be soon replaced by USB and later USB 2.0. You better get used to it 😉

honestly they are the disadvantage 🙂

anyway
i understand USB is more of a 'standard' but i just dont like it the way it eats up your cpu (less RC5)
sometimes older standards are just better

there are actually a few USB device that i think it is good
- USB Printer (these is much better than parallel)
- USB Webcam

but not
- USB mouse/keyboards

If USB mice will replace ps2, et al, then what OS version is planned to support a USB mouse during install: Winblows 2010?

Actually, it's Windblowsupyourass 2025 🙂

I have no beefs with Windows 2000 and it is not bloated to me.

In your BIOS you should have an option to enable USB legacy support.

This allowed my USB mouse to work in Win98 install and in Linux, but for some reason not in Linux install. Hrmm...

Of course then your mouse works on the USB IRQ and there is also an HID virtual mouse running on the PS/2 IRQ so you don't get the IRQ back if you do that.

xtreme2k: I must say that I agree with you on everything but the CPU usage, yes USB stuff uses CPU time, but seriously...it's a mouse...how much can it use? Other than that I agree...but the problem is PS/2 is ISA based..so when ISA goes so does PS/2. we'll have to get USB keyboards eventually. I'm personally in no big rush to move my KB and Mouse to USB, but it will happen eventually.
I'm quite happy with a 100hz refresh on PS/2 though, and then it works in Win98SE,2k and Linux and in all the installers. *shrugs* to each their own, some like USB mice, some don't.

Nope, all of my USB devices share an IRQ. IRQ 12 is what takes the PS2 mouse takes. Here's my IRQ lineup:

9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System
11 NVIDIA GeForce 256
11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
11 VIA USB Universal Host Controller
11 Creative SB Live! (WDM)
11 Hauppauge Win/TV 878/9 VFW Video Driver
11 NETGEAR FA310TX Fast Ethernet Adapter (NGRPCI)
11 Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem(M)
14 Primary IDE Channel
15 Secondary IDE Channel
12 Hauppauge Win/TV 878/9 VFW Audio Driver
8 System CMOS/real time clock
13 Numeric data processor
6 Standard floppy disk controller
4 Communications Port (COM1)
3 Communications Port (COM2)
1 Standard 101/102-Key or Microsoft Natural PS/2 Keyboard

lets hope there will be some firewire mouse/keyboard 🙂 that doesnt take up cpu power

usb mouse doesnt take much, but it is afew more % compared to PS2 even on a 600MHz+ computer
a few % is not significant but i consider substantial

Edit: i have had a Panasonic USB Webcam
uses over 60% CPU when it is purely 'capturing' (and i am not even saving the video) 🙂
and that is on my P3/700E overclocked to 868/124
another friend of my who had an 'older' PCI based webcam
about 20% used
this show sometimes USB can be a real cpu hog

I had a USB mouse working during a from-scratch Win98 install - on a Toshiba Portege 7010. Once Windows was installed, the mouse was properly detected.

I can do without a mouse during a Windows install. The keyboard is just as functional, and for me it's quicker. And after the install, well, I have yet to see a USB mouse that doesn't work right off the bat (on Win98 and Win2000). Not each and every button, but 2 buttons + wheel.
