installing win2k from scratch

Tried installing win2k pro on a bare machine, kept giving me this cd boot error code 5. Do i have to have an OS in my machine to put win2k in it?
 
I always reformat before I install win2k . Then I copy the i386 folder to the c: drive and run "winnt" from there.
 
if you have other partitons with fat32 files say from a previous win9x os then yeah stick to fat32 also once formatted then (if using the cdrom) in dos goto the I386 directory of the cd and then type winnt.exe and away you go.
