Installing Vista 64 Bit With Asus Board and 8GB RAM

Hey guys, I'm trying to get vista Ultimate 64-bit to install on this hardware. I just through together an ASUS M2N-E with a 5600+, bought 8GB of Corsair, and a second hard drive so I didn't have to ruin my perfectly functional computer by infecting it with Microsofts new OS.

However I'm stumped already because Vista bluescreens during installation.

I've read several threads on the problem. I've removed all my RAM except 2GB. I also flashed my motherboards BIOS to the latest version (running M2N-E build 1202), but there's no change in results. I don't know what else to try here so any input is appreciated. I'd love to know that the $$$ I just spent on all this hardware isn't a complete waste. 🙂

By the way, the system runs okay in XP with all 8GB of RAM installed.

Of course!

Seems to be the same issue people are linking to this thread at MS -
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929777

However obviously that's if you actually get the OS installed. I haven't gotten that far yet. 🙂

Thank you for your assistance!

yoinks....that can be a pretty generic error unfortunately. Well I spose we could start with the basics
-Are the components 'Vista Compatible?' Is the memory on the mobo supported list?
-run memtest86 for a while (like at least a few hours) http://www.memtest86.com/memtest33.zip
-Are the drives on a SATA or RAID controller? Make sure you're using the correct drivers during the install
-Remove any add-on cards until you get the OS installed
-flash to the lates BIOS-oops, just noticed you did that
-If you dont have a floppy drive, GET ONE and install it. Major suckage when you need one and dont have it (like running memtest)
-Go into Mr. BIOS and set the RAM timings and voltage to memory manufacturer specs. Also do not overclock at this point
-while in the BIOS, disable any unneeded devices (like serial port, firewire, onboard audio if you're getting an add on card, other onboard controllers like RAID, etc.....only of course if you're not using them)

I'm sure there are a bunch of other suggestions too, but that's all I can think of at the moment. Hopefully it'll help at least get you going in the right direction........

I had a similar problem with vista 64, there is an update that fixes the problem. I installed with 2GB, applied the update, and installed the additional RAM(4GB) and it worked fine. Microsoft article with link to update.

Let me get this straight: You bought 8 gbs of ram (I assume 4X2?) and then removed all but 2 gbs? Doesn't that mean you are trying to run it on 1 stick? I could be wrong here, but doesn't ram NEED to be installed in pairs to work?
