I recently bought a Vantec Multi-Function Front Panel, and when I opened the box, I saw that the plugs weren't an exact match for the ports on my motherboard, which is an ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3. So I have a few questions about hooking up the usb, firewire, and eSATA.
1- My internal motherboard ports for USB are the 5x4 type, but the plug for the usb ports on the front panel is a 5x1. I'm guessing I will have to get an adapter for this (5x1 to 5x4?). I suspect that if I were to try to stick this plug into one of the motherboard onboard usb ports as-is, I'd run the risk of causing problems. Is that right?
2- My internal motherboard ports for firewire are also 5x4, but the the plug for the 4-pin and 6-pin firewire ports on the front panel is a small cable with 6 discrete pins (similar to the 7-pin connector on the left of the picuture below):
If I were to install each of these 6 firewire pins into the 5x4 firewire port on the motherboard (I'd follow the 1394 pinout diagram in the motherboard manual), would the front panel firewire ports work, or would I have problems because there would be unused pins in the onboard port?
3- While I'm at it, I don't see a motherboard port for an eSATA connection, so I guess I'm just supposed to connect the eSATA cable from the front panel to one of the SATA ports on the motherboard, yes?
I've described the situation as well as I can, but if you need more info, fire away. Any advice would be most appreciated.
