Installing Ubuntu

I downloaded the Ubuntu image and i want to install it on my other hard drive. When i boot up with the disc and click the "Install or start Ubuntu" option, it says its loading, then the screen just goes black and it stays that way. Anybody know why i could be having this type of problem? Could it be a compatibility issue?

^^Athlon 3400, gigabyte board w/VIA chipset, ATI radeon 9550 AGP, kingston memory, maxtor IDE, seagate SATA....Does that help at all?

seagate SATA.. This your primary? This is probably the issue if so.. I had a few issues on different machines with SATA install. Then again your VC is an ATI so it could cause an problem.. Have you tried "safe VGA" mode or whatever its called?

Since the screen goes black I would say it's almost certainly the video card, SATA should be supported on just about everything with the JMicron stuff in the C2D setups being the main exception right now. But I don't have any real answers either though since I don't own a single ATI card primarily because their Linux support sucks.

Safe graphics mode in Edgy does not change the driver to vesa due to a bug (affects all machines sadly enough). Try the alternate install disc.

I tried the safe graphics mode, same black screen. Checked the disc for errors, none. It could possibly be the graphics card, but its an older card, it should be supported. I'll see if i can dig up some more info. I've never had problems with knoppix or dsl versions before.

At the bottom of the boot screen there's an entry box with the kernel command line, try removing the splash and quiet options.
