Installing the internet problem

I installed windows xp, i then installed my video card drivers, then I installed my sound card drivers. And then i plugged my ethernet chord in and it did nothing. I tried a bunch of things and then finally downloaded the LAN drivers from the GIGAbyte website and installed them, and it still didnt recognize the ethernet chord. I have no internet. What do I do?
