Installing software locks up system

Help,
This one is driving me crazy!
Whenever I try to install a program or game my system locks up at random times during the install. A hard lockup too...have to power it off.
I have tried installing Delta Force 2, Delta Force Land Warrior Demo, USAF, and some apps.
The strange thing is I can install fine in SAFE MODE, however then I don't have access to my CD-ROM drives and can't install anything from CD.
My system runs stable and rarely locks up otherwise.
Any suggestions?

Thanks,
bri

I used to have bad problems with that... until I reformatted and reinstalled windows. does your system ever lock up really hard at random (besides when installing)? if so... your best bet *might* (I said might!) be to reformat and reinstall windows.

my system locked up hard while reading this,,,,,,,i did a scan of files using the system file checker and found something in there,, a corrupted file............. ive got a win 98se cd coming and im going to try to reinstall windows to see if this fixes the problem.......

i have 800 amd,,,,asua a7v mobo,,,, im starting to see more and more people complaining about the a7 mobo, it's being touted as the hot item , im seeing they are finding more and more bugs that need to be addressed.
dont know if this is your problem or if this helps,
had to post with my system freezing while reading this........aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. GOOD LUCK EITHER WAY AND PLEASE POST IF REINSTALLING HELPS YOU

Well, my system does rarely lockup at other times. It does once in a great while when surfing the internet using IE 5.5 sp1. I disabled all things running (including Antivirus) and just left Systray and Explorer running.
I would really hate to reformat and reinstall everything but if thats my only option...well...I will do it.

Thanks

LOWDRAG...
Maybe I will try and run the system file checker...thats in Windows somewhere correct?

I am running a AMD Duron 700 with the Abit KT7...it has been a very stable system for me... I think my issues are software related.
