I'm doing a major kitchen remodeling project (moving one wall, eliminating a window on another wall, removing the ceiling joists and going up to the roof joists for a vaulted ceiling (tongue and groove), and putting in skylights to give the room more natural light. New cabinets, rewiring, installing a dishwasher, etc. The existing window has a horrible view and faces north (the only bad view from our property), plus due to its location and dimensions, greatly limits the options for appliances, sink, etc. It'll be better without it.
Question: Will I need to completely re-shingle that section of the roof? (I've never installed skylights before) Will I be able to salvage the existing roof shingles from the area where I'm installing the skylight, such that I won't have to struggle to find matching shingles? Is 30 to 40 degrees too cold to work on the roofing?
I've got some experience with roofing - installed my own steel roof on a garage, rolled rubber roofing, and a couple of complete tear-down and re-roof jobs. But I've never done something where I alter the middle of the roof. I don't want leaks!
