Installing rom question(now with CM 9 first impressions)

ok im a smartphone newbie so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I have a samsung galaxy S2 I9100, its currently running 2.3.5, rooted with CF root.

I want to install CM9 now that its in RC version finally.

When i rooted i also got this CWM program installed that has a option to flash a update.zip.

So to install CM9 is all i have to do download the zip onto my phone and then use CWM to flash it?

Pretty much. You don't necessarily flash "update.zip" you pick install zip from sd card. Just make sure you have the right version 🙂

Also, if you are moving from stock to CM, you should wipe data first.

BTW... CM doesn't come with google apps and you will need to install those separate. http://wiki.rootzwiki.com/Google_Apps

Thank you very much. One more question, i have titanium backup and have used it to keep up to date backups of my phone, can i install it again after i flash CM 9 and use it to install one of my backups and then get all my programs and text messages and whatnot back?

Also how do you wipe data?

There's going to be issues with doing a once through restore because you're moving major OS versions. The best thing to do with Ti backup is restore individual apps you find important to keep the data. If you do a full restore+data of absolutely everything you'll most likely have issues.

Which brings up another issue. When you flash a new rom you have to go through setup again which syncs your account. That's all fine and dandy, but if you put your account info in at the beginning you can't tell it to NOT sync apps... which means it's going to start downloading every single app you've ever downloaded from that account onto your phone. My suggestion is to select "skip" during intial setup when it asks for a google account. Then when you get to the homescreen you can add your account the usual way (settings>accounts & sync) and select what actually syncs, and don't sync apps yet. Then you can start restoring through Ti backup.

Also, does Ti backup cover SMS by default? I didn't think it did (unless you paid, which you might have) which is why I use a separate app called SMS backup. It's free and has worked well for me.

Thank you for your very detailed answer!

Yes i paid for ti backup, also i dont use the default android/samsung sms program i use handcent so i would assume if i restored that app it would also restore all my messages.

I'm not sure. I use handcent too and still used SMS backup. I don't think it restored the messages on its own but I can't remember. Better safe than sorry I'd say since it's easy and free to make sure they're backed up.

You can wipe data by selecting the 3rd or 4th option in clockwork mod.. it will say wipe data/factory reset... you also should do wipe cache. Be wary of restoring apps... it can cause problems sometimes. Example, I did it recently and was getting 8 hours out of my battery, now i restored one by one and I am getting 24 hours. All caused by one rogue app that I can't identify. The problem usually is some corrupt data being restored /w the app.

ok major issue now

I got cm 9 installed, i got googlee apps installed, got signed into my google account and all that.

I then downloded ti backup from the playstore, and installed it.

And now i cant run it, i dont know where it is, its not in my apps list, and when i go to it in the google play store i only have a uninstall option not a open option. How do i open ti backup to start restoring my apps?

ok next stupid question, how do i restore my contacts from ti backup?

Are your contacts stored in your gmail account? (I hope they are).

If so, they will just re-download when you log into your google account.

If they aren't, when you did a backup did you backup user apps and system apps or just user apps?

i dont know if backed up to google.

I did full backup of user and system apps.

You don't have to backup google, google will store all your contacts in the cloud and when you log in for the first time it will pull them all back down. Easiest way to tell is just log into gmail on the web and look and see if you contacts are there.

If they were stored locally, just look for something like [CONTACTS/CALLS] in TiBu.

Just make sure you don't make a habit of restoring user apps + system apps. Restore user apps and cherry pick the system apps you want to restore. It's usually ok to restore the ones that are green, anything red you probably don't want to restore.

apparently my contacts were not backed up with google, i synced and still have none in my phone dialer. I restored my text messages and have them showing in handcent but all just phone numbers no names.

I didn't even know you could store contacts and not have them sync to a google account.... I learned something new too...

yeah im kinda annoyed, how did ti backup grab my sms's which i have now restored but not get my friggin phone numbers and names for contact.

Yup, this

I'll also clarify (just in case) that you can do the backup however you want OP (as one big group). Just don't do a bulk restore. I've been told that the problem is usually more due to big OS changes (going from gingerbread to ICS) so if you do a smaller update it might work out. Though the small updates don't always require a full device wipe anyway.

i am restoring apps one at a time.

Stupid question because you probably checked... but is the contact list actually empty? Handcent has proven to be slow to update with contact info in my case.

I don't always have google sync on so I've lost contacts before too. It sucks :'(

If you can't get your contacts back I would suggest going through your text messages and adding everyone as Google contacts. Then you don't have to worry about it in the future.

well kinda, i looked into the recent tab and have some names now to go with numbers. Funny how it recorded this in the recent tab in handcent but didnt save any of the contacts and the contacts tab is blank.

ok got it all figured out now guys!

Just remembered i backed up all my contacts and number to my sim card! so i imported them from my sim card and now have all my names and numbers back!

Thanks to all of the above for helping the smartphone newbie.

Now move them all to Google contacts and you will never lose them again.
