installing pro over another version of XP?

can you install XP pro over other versions of XP (e.g. home) without losing data/installed apps?

I would imagine you could do an upgrade install, but I wouldnt want to try as I HATE upgrade installs, they are the devil.

I've done a few from XP home to XP pro without problems, but you have to reinstall all the updates too
