i bought one of those small notebooks which don't have a cd-rom drive. I need to install OS as it's second hand and came without O/S. I understand I need to install the driver for my PCMCIA-connected CD-ROM drive onto a windows 95/98 start-up disk to get things going. How exactly do you do that?

You will need to copy 2 files onto the boot floppy. One of them is the cd-rom.sys file (note that the name is not cd-rom, it varies by type of cd-rom). The second file is mscdex.exe. You will need an entry in config.sys for the cd-rom.sys and an entry in autoexec.bat for mscdex.exe. I'm not sure, but you may need some files related to PCMCIA as well.
