As the title says, im installing new heatsinks, and i just have a quick question....

i know artic silver 5 isnt totally conductive, but will small, minute smears be a harm to anything (not like globs, but just small smears where i wiped it off)??

also, for my AMD 3500+, the XP-90C doesnt fit all the way on, theres like a 2mm space from the back of the heatsink to the back of the CPU, this really wont affect anything will it?

Any size, small or large of AS5 that connects two traces = Shortage = Dead mobo or dead other parts too.

2mm gap is huge...

Can't say I understand the first part perfectly. If you mean that you accidentally smeared AS5 on some of your mobo components... I don't think that's a biggie. You could try to get it off though.

As for the second part, I'm sure it's okay. If that part of the heatspreader doesn't have thermal paste on it then it wouldn't do as good as the rest anyway, so you're really not losing out on much.

edit: well there's your consensus :)

I agree with you.

I think Kensai's just trying to scare him. :p

Depends on where the AS5 hit.. If it hit the wrong electrical traces.. Fun will be unsured.

Well, if you clean off the paste before you power up the board, I think you'll be fine.
But of course, I could be completely wrong here. I use ceramique and don't have to worry about the capacitive nature of AS5.

BTW, unsured?
