I installed a new motherboard and processor in my old computer and It will no longer boot up.
My Specs:
Abit-AV8
AMD Athlon 64 3400+
GeForce3 Ti 200 Graphics Processor
2 DDR 256MB PC3200 400Mhz

Whats going on is when I turn it on. Everything powers up like its suppose to but then beeps 4 times and turns off. Before the screen even gets a chance to power on. This motherboard has a Post code display on it. When I power it on it goes to 86, then 9C is when it beeps and turns off, then goes to 9F. If someone nows what I did wrong please help.

Ok I got the computer to turn on. But know Iam stuck in a loop When it starts It says no sync then does some loading and goes to where you can pick safe mode and the likes.

After the fact, I have to admit to doing something I always tell other folks never to do when dealing with any kind of computer and/or any level of computer user. NEVER ASSUME ANYTHING. When I initially replied, it seemed so obvious to me that I didn't even say that I was assuming you had hoped to use the same hard drives that were in the computer with the old motherboard in it. But I did make that assumption.

Before you removed the old motherboard, if you had hopes of avoiding a re-install of Windows (on the existing hard drive{s} from the computer), you needed to go into Add/Remove to uninstall all of the drivers associated with the old motherboard, and then remove all of the "devices" from it in the Device Manager. If not, and it's an old W9x OS, you're probably stuck with reformatting the boot partition at minimum, and reinstalling.

Should you have W2K or WinXP installed, there is a repair option you can get to from the OS' CD. Not having had to perform a repair myself, I'll leave it to you to get into an OS forum to ask how to get the system back up again; I just don't know, sorry.

And Kiwi's advice is right on for the information you've given.

Interesting thread.

HERE'S an Anandtech article on how to change mobo's w/o a reformat/reinstall.

Scroll down to the "Misc Notes" where the repair is mentioned.

Can't personally vouch for it, I always reformat etc.
