installing mandrake 9.2

is tehre any update or do i have to reinstall the whole thing? im running 9.1 now...

EDIT: just went to the site and all the ftps dont have ISO images for 9.2 yet and i dont know what to do with the files that they do have available...

Wait until there are isos available (sometime very soon) and then run them (stick 'em in and reboot) there should be an option in the installer to upgrade a previous installation. Pick that one and then pray because with previous versions of mandrake I have had a few unusual experiences with upgrading (backup all your important stuff first though and post if everything goes well).

Mandrake has an option of upgrading the packages. Basically an upgrade to a new version is something as simple as upgrading most (if not all) packages, applying a few patches, etc.
try to type 'rpmdrake' as root (or sudo) in the terminal window and see what you get. I think there is an option for upgrading packages. Else try 'drakconf'.

While it does update packages to new versions it really works best for security updates and bugfixes unless you select the cooker packages which can break your system pretty quickly.

well the rpmdrake thing finds no updates... and i guess i just need to wait for ISOs eh thats cool

i plan to reformat my linux partition to install 9.2 anyway because i played around a lot with the 9.1 install hehe

Maybe you are right. I never ran into such problems during my Mandrake days, though...

You can do a network install ...

Someone posted the method on slashdot today.

(I have done network install before, but that was for Mandrake 7.2...🙂)

I recently upgraded a computer from Redhat 8.0 to Redhat 9.0 using the apt-rpm tools from freshrpm and actually worked out suprisingly well. Turned off X then changed the apt-get sources to 9.0 rpm repositories and did the apt-get dist-upgrade. Rebooted, reinstalled the nvidia vid drivers and it worked out suprisingly well.

Maybe something like this is aviable for Mandrake.

Now I had trouble with apt for Suse so I wouldn't recommend it without testing it out myself anymore for any distro other then Redhat, but since your planning on reformating you may as well try something weird like that out. If it screws up then your back to reinstalling/upgrading the new version anyways. 🙂

omfg 9.2 just came out?

God damn I spent three days downloading and i burned 9.1 expecting to install it right after I surfed AT....

/me goes back to the drawing board

Ah well hopefully it'll have nforce2 support and update versions of programs so i don'thave to do it myself 😉

well 8.1 looked REALLY raw to me and I was turned off by that becuas ei thought win95 looked cleaner...then i moved to RH9.0/1 and had fun but i don't like how i have to configure it all (just like how i don't like to do it in winows 😉 its not i can't - i can its just takes too much time and now that i'm in college time is of the essence) though i loved the GUI....in the end i wanted something that looked good like RH but came chock full of goodies (I don't beleive this "customize" stuff by purists who like to setup their linux manually through the source so they know everything that goes on) like Drake and 9.1 looked cool....

but after looking at the features to see how they also made a desktop like bluecurve (galaxy) that makes me even happier.
