What distributions are there out there that I can use? Yellowdog, LinuxPPC, and Mandrake. Does anyone have experience? How is the hardware support? Please let me know.

No, OSX is not an option for me at this on this particular machine so please no recommendations for that. I would use it if the department would shell out some money, but for now, nope.

Mac OS X.1!!!

Anyhow, on to the real answer. SuSE PPC got a pretty good review a while back. OpenBSD has pretty good support for PPC.

I have never installed SuSE so I cant give you personal experiences but I have heard good things about it. Installation is possbly one of the stupidest parts to get hung up about. If you know how to get your work done better after installation you will only have to see that installation program 1 time ;)

But anyways, SuSE does some good work, they should be a good bet on PPC.

Debian also has a PPC port. As well as linuxppc. (just browsing linuxiso.org) :p

i suck. im on my second try install of mandrake ppc. hahaha! the first time the graphical installer was different shades of pink! i could barely read anything. well it installed and looked like it was booting in fine but when i booted in, the display was bad. couldnt see anything. this time around the installer looks right. we shall see though.
