Installing legacy nVidia drivers in Lubuntu 12.10

I have an extremely old PC based on the nForce2 chipset, and I wanted to salvage it so my brother could have a PC that worked, so I installed Lubuntu 12.10.

However, where I run into an issue is that I am used to OpenSuSE, it wouldn't recognise the IGP, and the refresh rate was set to 60Hz, which means I couldn't work on it for any length of time before I started feeling nauseous.

I tried googling, but I can't find many threads that aren't 9-10 years old at this point.

When I booted into the Lubuntu LiveCD, I don't even think it was using nouveau. The refresh rate was stuck at 60HZ, unable to change, and with me being very sensitive to such a low refresh rate, I started feeling sick after about a minute trying to use the computer.

It's the IGP on an nForce2 board, so basically a Geforce4 MX420, or some such variant.

I'm not sure how to deal with that using a live cd. If you could install to a thumb drive it would be easier to play with. Making changes to X require a reboot(you lose all changes), or a restart of X. I just tried restarting X in a live VM, and I couldn't get it back.

Lubuntu booted just fine, and the computer more than meets the recommended specs. It's an AthlonXP 2800+ with 1GB of RAM. Plus, Lubuntu has all of Ubuntu's repos.

I just want to get a graphic driver installed, so I can use a refresh rate higher than 60HZ. 60HZ makes me nauseous.

I don't understand why it wouldn't just use nouveau, since Lubuntu uses kernel 3.5, and as far as I know, it's in the kernel now.

I suppose I'll try actually installing it, and seeing what happens from there.
