You would lose a lot of potential customers. Some consumers are more apt to make an impulse buy walking down the software aisle when they see the box.

Plus I got my copy of L4D as a Christmas gift. Not sure how that would have worked as a download.

What you say is true; however, I am more concerned about the people who buy without reading the requirements rather than the companies. These people have been criticised above for failing to read the small print and that is a fair comment. For their part, as I have stated above, the companies could and I believe should make "Internet Required" warnings much more conspicuous, at the very least.
