installing laptop memory??

so my notebook is an ECS A535, and I purchased a 512mb stick of ram for it as 128 just isnt enough. I bought it from 4allmemory.com and they say its guaranteed to work with it. I made sure i selected the right manufactuer and model from their list. I opened the ram expansion door on the bottom of the notebook, put the ram in and it clicked into place. Now however, when I turn my computer back on it still says i only have 128mb. It has windows xp, and the manual states upgradable to 640mb (by adding a 512mb stick), what am i doing wrong? why doesnt it recognize my ram?
 
How old is the laptop? It might be a BIOS issue as well as an issue with double sided memory. is it double sided?
 
Weird. The only thing I can think of is your laptop's motherboard is very picky with what ram it takes and unfortunately but it doesn't take that particular ram. Get something name brand, Kingston, Crucial, etc.
 
Did you try removing the old ram first and see if the notebook will determine the new ram. Unless of course the old ram is a soldered type ram on the mobo.
