Installing key-logging software -- Is it wrong?

Over the weekend, I went over to a buddy's house and while I was repairing his computer, he mentioned that he wanted to spy on his sister's internet usage (he's out of college and his sister is still in high school).

His entire family is computer illerate so no one would know if it was installed or not. I installed the software for him but I told him if he gets caught, I take no responsibility and will not acknowledge having installed the software in the first place. The way the software installs is very discrete and requires a combination of keys (i.e. Ctrl-Alt-P) to activate.

Now my question is, has anyone ever done this before? The software is geared towards parents and I realize parents are entitled to be concerned but does anyone else think this is going too far? I felt guilty installing the software but I'm not the one to preach moral values to my friends (especially at this age). Since it doesn't involve my family, I couldn't care less. 🙂

Is it necessary evil or an invasion of privacy? Let me know what you all think.

The guy has problems if he is spying on his sister. Problem trying to track phone numbers of her friends so he can attempt to get laid.

Never said he didn't have problems. 🙂 He never gave me a reason as to why he's spying on his sister but I think sometimes he tries to act like a parent to his sister because he is so much older.

Brother spying on sister? Sounds hot, but wrong. Very wrong.

On a side note, how many people hit Ctrl-Alt-P after reading this?

As brother to sister, invasion of privacy.

He should have suggested it to the parents and let them decide.

You were wrong to install it. That was a family decision and responsibility.

mebbe if u help him catch the sis doing something illegal, blackmail her and set up the 3some

yes this is so wrong on so many levels

Actually by default it is Ctrl-Alt-Y but I used P just as an example. 😉

I would understand a parent doing this, or perhaps the brother setting it up for the parents (although I wouldn't be thrilled about it in either case unless the child had already done something bad), but the brother setting it up to spy on his sister himself is a horrendous invasion of privacy and an overstepping of his power.

<--Has a younger sister.

Agree with the above, it just seems wrong. I don't even plan on doing this with my own (eventual) children; I couldn't even imagine trying to track my brother.

He has his own computer but I was there to fix his wireless router problem so he uses that computer to surf the internet. It's a computer for everyone in the family.

Yikes. He might find some things out he didn't want to know about his family. I can see his father having a lurid online affair with some dude or his mom talking to a guy on IM with the screenname "Beefy Biff." He may be scarred for life. The sister is the least of his worries. 😛

Now he can steal his parents credit card numbers and make online purchases.

Even better... what if she's actually more computer literate than you give her credit for, and SHE has keylogging software! Then, she'll have free reign of the computer, and can keep track of her brother. Kinda like a double agent. Then, she can have fun with him and fake "romantic encounters" with all of his friends.
