If it's a new Hard Drive then you prolly have an ATA 100 so make sure you change the ribbon cable as well as setting the jumper properly!

Typically Optical drives are hooked up with ATA33 cables and the newer Hard Drives call for ATA100 which have twice as many wires and are thinner. You can see examples between the 2 @ www.pccables.com. You need these to get the full benefit of the faster Drives

you'll also need a mounting kit to mount a 3.5" drive in a 5.25" bay, but those shouldnt be more than $2-$3 at your local computer store.

Well one of the slot doesnt work at all. I tired differnet combinations of drives, cables but my comptuer doesnt read them. Is there a way to check or fix this? thanks.

I concur with that diagnosis ^_^.

Also, you may want to invest in a PCI controller, for extra drives. Though your powersupply may not support it. HDDs draw a lot of power due to the motor spin.
