Installing Epox 8K7A tonight. What do I need?

Is there a driver download I want to do, say from Epox.com? Will I need anything off the disk that comes with the MB? BTW, people, there's Norton Antivirus (for Win9x, evidently) and Ghost on that disk. Check the manual for instructions on using the Norton Ghost.

I have a bunch of drivers on 100 MB zipdisk, but how do I get my zip driver working in my new system? Does Windows 2000 have drivers for it? The driver download from Iomega was an executable around 5 MB, called Iomega Ware. Does that explode into component files or is that an installation executable. If it explodes into files, I can compress onto floppies and install the zip drive from the spanned floppies.

I don't want to wait until I get Internet connected with this machine, because I don't know how to do that yet (Pacbell DSL and Windows 2000 Pro). I could work up something with Prassi CD and my CDRW, but then I have to get that installed on the new machine, potentially another set of problems.

Thanks for the ideas.

In the Epox 8K7A BIOS the default setting for PNP OS is disable. I'm going to install Windows 2000 Professional. Do I want to leave the setting like that? Why??

Thanks.

Just leave the PNP OS setting in the bios alone... it won't make a difference either way. You can get all the latest drivers and BIOS on the epox website. Windows2K has drivers for your zip drive already....you shouldn't need to dl them from IOmega.

I'm not sure what you'r going to need, but I just ordered an 8K7A for my new system that I'm going to be putting together later this week so I'd be interested in finding out as well

You mean I'll have to flash the MB BIOS? I saw a post today saying that if I have a Rev. 1.0 8K7A I will probably have to get a new BIOS from Epox. I'm not sure if I need a new chip or new software. Any idea? Thanks. And thanks for that tip about the zip drive. One less thing to worry about...

The Zip drive shouldn't be a problem because there are only a few different kinds and the standard drivers are available on the Windows 2000 CD. I always burn the drivers I think I will need onto a CD-R (with Nero) before starting a major upgrade/build. that way you can be assured that they will be available because one of the first components added on is the CD-ROM. The disk contained with the motherboard has all the drivers you will need to get rolling. It has the AMD AGP miniport drivers along with some recent versions of the portions of the VIA all-in-ones that you will need. The two I put together in the past month didn't need BIOS updates, although they did have two different BIOSes on them. If you want to download and flash the newest BIOS onto the board you can do that too. It has some great overclocking features in it too, but I wasn't building the systems for overclocking, so I didn't bother.

1, I would set the PNP OS to enable in the BIOS. You will need like he said, the AMD AGP Drivers, and the VIA 4-in-1's except you won't install the AGP driver.

How do you burn the drivers with Nero? I have Nero 4.0.7.2. The only thing I've ever tried doing with it is copying CDs. That Nero came with my Creative 8-4-32 CD-RW drive. The drive also came with Prassi CD, which I have used some to copy files to CDRW, and it makes your CDRW drive act like a floppy or Zip drive. However, I'd need Prassi CD installed on the new system to be able to read the disks, and that sounds iffy, especially since the new system is going to be Win2k. Does the BIOS download from Epox's website include instructions on how to flash the BIOS? I've never flashed a BIOS before and I've seen a ton of posts saying you have to be very careful when you do, backup your current BIOS, etc. Is there a setup program on the Epox 8K7A CD that guides you through an install process of the various drivers? I just downloaded a few things from the Epox website:

via-IDEonly-3011.zip is VIA Apollo IDE busmaster 1.9 MB update from Epox website v3.011
via-686-120.exe is VIA Apollo chipset Audio update file (do I want or need that? I'm not going to be using the onboard audio - got a Hercules Game Theater XP sound card).
8k7a1711 is 07/11/01 bios update for the 8k7a
http://www.epox.com/html/english/support/motherboard/bios/8k7a.htm is where I just got these.

To enable or not to enable... One guy says it doesn't matter. Another guy told me to disable it (not in this thread), but didn't explain why. At the MS KB website, I got the impression just reading some stuff on ACPI that it DOES matter and plenty: If you install Windows 2000 with PNP OS enabled, ACPI support will be used, otherwise, it won't. It depends on the BIOS setting when you install. Sounds like a biggie to me. Two votes for NO, one vote for YES, one vote for DOESN'T MATTER. What?!?!?

Thanks for the help, folks... I'm nervous. I don't do this much, being a programmer, ya know. Only assembled one system and that was almost 4 years ago and EVERYTHING'S changed in the meantime.
