installing DirectX 8.1

what is the diff. between installing DirectX 8.1 first and follow by all my system drivers and all my system drivers first and then follow by DirectX 8.1. The same goes to windows update. are there any diff. between installing all windows updates first and follow by all my system drivers and all my system drivers first and follow by all windows critical updates

I find that it's better to install all of the Microsoft stuff (windows updates and DX) first and then the special drivers for everything else. That way you avoid the possibility that MS's generic drivers can overwrite some of the files that are part of the drivers from part makers that you install seperately. They've gotten better about it, but it's still a chance. Here's my windows setup order:

1) Windows OS
2) Updates from MS
3) DirectX
4) Motherboard chipset (especially AGP) drivers
5) Video card drivers
6) Drivers for everything else
