Installing both cable and directv on Friday

Well, my new home is served by a small cable company, which does not yet have movies on demand and cannot supply MLB Extra Innings, two things my wife and I require.

So I am using the local cable company for internet and having Directv installed for on demand and baseball.

This is all happening on Friday, both installers could be there at the same time.

My wife will be home for the installs, but I'm trying to gather any tips or recommendations about the installation.

Any specifics of how she should be directing the directv installer to connect? We live in a townhouse with a small deck (which will be replaced next year)

Any lessons learned from anyone else having cable and directv coexisting in the same house?

And what the hell do I do when directv needs a phone jack and 2 of the 3 receivers might not be very close to a jack, do they have wireless capability?

Help me out

I just had nearly the same situation the other day (but with Dish Network instead of Direct TV). I scheduled them for the same time - but thankfully one was early and one was late.

The cable - since you're only using it for internet, make sure you get a direct line to the modem. If there was an existing cable install in your place, there may be splitters installed - get those out of the loop.

The satellite - I doubt this will come up unless you have a bunch of lines already running into each room you need installed - but don't let the installer hook into any existing lines. Get any old cable out of there first. If you have old RG59 in place, it will not be as good a signal as the fresh RG6 the satellite guy will be using.

I don't know about Direct TV, but for Dish you only need the phone jack installed if you are going to be ordering movies. Are you going to be watching the PPV stuff on all the boxes?

Why is he wasting money? He wants internet service with one provider and satellite television with another. He isn't bound to subscribing to cable just because he wants a cable modem.

Not true in his case. If he wants PPP movies ordered through the reciever, he needs a phone line. If he wants the high dollar sports channels, he needs a phone line.

Here's some tips for the DirecTV guy: Have your wife insist that they install wall jacks instead of simply drilling up through the floor if you have a crawl space.

Also, if you are renting, tell them you own the place OR have written permission from the owner. If you are renting and do not have written permission, many instal contractors will not install the system.

And have the dish mounted on the house, not on a pole in the ground. Pole mounts tend to get knocked out of alignment too easily.

Thanks for the input, some additional information:
I will have TiVo in the living room, which I do not believe has a phone jack in it at all, I may need to put a splitter in the kitchen and do some sort of wireless phone jack for that 20' span.

I bought the townhouse, so I'm covered there.

It's on a slab, no crawlspace.

I will be ordering MLB Extra Innings (pricey as hell but baseball is a requirement, the primary reason I'm going Directv. Comcast used to have everything in one at my old place, but 08873 doesn't have many options)

I have 3 requirements for my in-home entertainment:
1- Digital televesion/cable with movies on demand capability
2- Broadband internet access
3- The ability to order MLB EI.

And yeah, that package can get expensive, but those are the requirements in my household for domestic tranquility.

And I may have to do some crawling in the attic, the previous owners ran jerry-rigged cables everywhere, I don't want them re-used unless absolutely necessary.

The office (3rd BR) will be the main interesting spot, it'll have both internet and directv in there, and I think it's got a jerry-rigged phone connection.

Thanks much for answers, I've heard elsewhere I should not let them attach to the roof or even the siding if I can help it, up under the eaves and through the attic rather than drilled through walls.

Wish I could afford to be there to make sure all goes smooth, but my personal days are pretty slim.

don't mess with installing a new phone jack....once you make your initial call on the DirecTivo, you don't really ever need to call again....you'll get daily nag messages, but you can safely ignore them...I also
bought a 25' phone line, and just plug it in, force a daily call and unplug it when I need to.
