I have a question for anyone who has installed an Athlon64 or similar processor. I just ordered one, but I don't know where/if you are supposed to put the thermal compound since there is the silver heat spreader over the top. Can someone please fill me in?

What? Are you serious? I just used arctic silver 3 on my friend's rig which is a Barton 3000. It won't work? Another question, I got some on one of the small die's next to the center. Will this do anything, I tried to clean it up, but there might still be contact. Thanks.

Did you even look at a 64?

Huh? I don't think what you installed was an Athlon64.

Anyways, to answer the original question, i believe you install it like a P4, just put a thin layer across the entire silver heat spreader.

Use the best thermal paste and spread it all over the top. This is now the same as with Pentium. Try not to mess up the socket.

You don't spread it all over the top. You put a small BB sized dot in the middle and install the heatsink... there's no spreading needed, as stated here.

That perhaps work fine in theory but I did as usual all over the top and I have fairly good results. 41C on A64 under Prime95 running stable at 2.4 GHz with 1.66V actual, with air cooling.
Of course you know the best as usual, in theory. :D
