Installing Athlon on ECS Board...

....since I am new to AMD, I have a question about installation of the chip. I have the chip in the SOcket so that the AMD logo is parallel to the memory slots as shown here:

If you bought a retail chip I would read the booklet that came with it which gives you all the needed info on installation.

In fact, the chip and socket are designed such that you can only install it one way. It should pretty much just drop in without any force to push it into the socket. The pins should line up so the orientation you have it in now should be fine.

Just be real careful when installing the HSF. The Athlon core is delicate--just follow AMD's installation guide. Here is a link to the PDF. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view the guide.

I built my own athlon last year, and abits manual wasn't that great (englishnese) or something but I could do it so I'm sure you can to, the heatsink is the only problem, I had to bend the clip in order for it to get on the board and over the chip....my system has been rnning for a year now fine though so it was good..I'm wating for my ECS board to arrive with my tbird 1.4 chip..I'll be doing the same as you soon.

all you have to do dude is line up the chip with the mobo socket, there's one cut corner you line
up with the same cut corner on the mobo. add a lil coolant on top of the chip then place your heatsink onto the top of the chip, after that place a processor fan on the heatsink, screwed down and connected to the mobo or the power supply and there you have it! hope you get it working!

Thanks for your help, but I noticed that there were two cut corners on the mobo...I think.

There is a single pin in two corners and a row of three pins in the other two. It only fits in one way.

Yeah, thats what I have done, but it's annoying that the ECS board says slightly differently. Thansk for your help fellas. I bought a shim for it too, just in case

It's an Athlon 1.4Ghz, 256MB PC2100 DDR RAM and a GF2 32MB GTS. It won't be built until the weekend, but I wanted to put the CPU in as it was an OEM (bargain price) and I didn't want it lying around without a box Unfortunately, the system is not for me, but is for my brother, but I'm sure it will under go sufficient 'testing' by Unreal Tournament
