I am trying to install an Awe64 on my system. After I install the card into the isa slot, windows won't read it as a pnp. am i doing something wrong? I have the on board sound turned off.

The ISA sound card is usually need jumper setting and not PnP. If so, make sure the IRQ, and IO address are not conflict. It usually set it to IRQ 5.

I just found out that winxp rarely supports isa sound cards, if you can get them to work, they may produce sound. oh well, it was worth a shot

thanks for the help

No probelm, why not using the onboard sound instead of awe64? This card is kind of old.

I agree, your onboard sound is probably on par with an AWE64 or maybe even a bit better.

If he is using an ISA card, odds are that his motherboard does not have onboard sound.

On top of that, he may just prefer his Awe64.

To bad "improvements" do not account for preference.... :(

I feel for you scorpmatt.

First option should have been to fire up the Hardware Wizard and have it search for new hardware after you installed the sound card. It should detect the sound card and recommend drivers.

Second option would be to start Hardware Wizard, bypass the automatic new hardware detection, and look for Creative SB16, AWE, or compatible under the list of available sound, video, and game controller devices.

I've used numerous isa cards in xp, including an awe64, with very few issues. My guess on what's going on is that the needed resources for the sound card are being used already. This "hides" the needed pnp resources the sound card wants or needs. That card is pnp with no jumpers. I would try pulling all cards and turning off all onboard devices, and see if xp could then find the sound card cleanly.
