Installing a T1 at my house

So I'm thinking of installing a T1 at my house to host my own sites and my own game servers. I'm just starting to investigate this and the options seem to look like (prices approx):

1.5M T1 = $450 per month
768k T1 = $350 per month
384k T1 = $250 per month

I'm sure some of you currently have one or have worked with having a T1. Do I need above 384? If I run a few systems - a few bf2 and CSS servers and a few websites, do I need higher than 384k?

Thanks for the info. I have no idea what I need here.

Not sure about gaming but I know when we setup jobsite we need to have at least 384 up for videoconference.

If you intend to run more than 1 server at all, you're going to NEED that 1.5Mbps connection. ESPECIALLY if you're running game servers.

I used to do the exact same thing you're talking about only on a crappy 3mbps/384kbps connection. The upload cap is what kills you, but with 384, don't count on running even one game server.

Dear lord man, no cable modem in your area? Since population is so low in VT, I'm getting 3Mbit/sec for <50 a month from charter.

Edit: I know jack about T1s and am not sure if something special makes them better.

yes, I have a cable modem, but setting up a serious set of game hosting servers - possibility of 2-5 servers might kill that. :)

You might be ok with just cable. I get 768up on my comcast connection. Thats all I need for my server.

No option for SDSL?

Speakeasy seem to do 1.5/1.5 SDSL for $300/mo
Dunno about others, I'm just having a quick poke on DSLReports since I'm not from the US.

Did you ever think about renting space at a datacenter? You'd get A TON more bandwidth. You should be able to get a half-rack around $600 depending on your area.

Isn't it better/more cost-effective to get SDSL or something like that if you really want the servers at home?

I know that BF2 uses about 10KB/s throughput, this is WITHOUT using the VoIP. So to run a decent 32 player server wihout VoIP you are going to need at least the 768. Those speeds are synchronous, correct?

Have a T1 installed at the cafe. I'm not sure on CSS but we allocated 5KB/s per player for CS, and on a 16 player server there goes almost 1/2 of your bandwidth. BF2 takes up even more. If you run websites, make sure you throttle otherwise you'll get lag spikes.

In the end, we gave up on running servers because the connection just wasn't fast enough even with a T1.

Ummm, 768 is only 96KB/s. It'll barely support 10 players.

I also agree on getting hosting as being more cost effective for you.

A blade center would be very small space wise, all the power and bandidth you'd need.

if ur not at a major pop, a t1 wont do you any good.. only people near you will get good speed, people that need to take multiple hops to your t1 will lag like crazy..

installing t1 may cost up to 1k.. and you will need t1 csu/dsu and router.. hope you got $$ for that.. also a good firewall.. you can use linksys stuff..

at least with a t1, you can get a class c, thats enuff ip.. or u can nat it.. etc..

you can also bond 2 t1 up to 4, or go fractional ds3 after that..

too expensive..

dude..just have some host it for you.

The overhead is jsut killer.

(hosted games + host for you sites) OR (colo and do it all yourself) are both greater than a puny T1 line

Getting a T1 to host at your house is such a waste of money and impractical idea. 1.5mbps is NOTHING if you plan on hosting stuff.

Co-lo or rent servers and stick to Cable/DSL at home.

I would agree that it would be a waste of money. Not only do you have to pay for the monthly, don't forget the DSU/CSU unit plus a router so you can even use it. If you really want, check out Ds3 ( we have 10 Mbit up and down). I don't know about pricing, but 1.5 will be useless pretty quick...

Here at the Mission Inn, Time Warner's hardware is in our basement, so we get cheap access to Bandwidth for them not having to pay rent. But the way they do the D3 lines in the area they just terminate them right off of their own network, so we didn't have to buy new equipment, just plugged our DMZ right in and we are connected.

Another important aspect is redundancy, security, etc. Half-way decent DCs will provide insurance, Fire / storm protection (building structure, hvac), UPS, generator, multiple links, etc, etc, etc. Trying to do this on your own will be extremely costly.

I used to run a Tribes 1 and for a short time a Tribes 2 server out of my house I had 2 T1's installed at right around $600 each monthly, and paid a little over 900 to have them installed. I could support 32 players at a time without issue.

It was fun, but it was $1200 I probably should have used for something else. But it was fun as sh!t.

I dropped both T1's when I ran out of that thing called 'money'. I switched to residential cable 3mbit down 256 then 512 up, and could host about 8 players before ping became an issue @ 512kbps up. 6 @ 256.
