Installing a Second DVD-RW Drive

Ok, not really sure whats wrong. I am trying to install a second DVD-RW drive. When I connect it and boot I get some blue screen of death saying something has changed from last boot and make sure everything is connected correctly. I assume I did something wrong.

There is one of those wide flat cables coming from the motherboard to my old DVD-RW drive. In between them is another of the connections. The one going into the older drive is black, the middle one is grey. I am guessing I'm not supposed to use that plug? The only other plug that is in there is the power cord from the power supply. That's all I need right? That is all that was in the old drive.

Do I have to add another of the plugs from the motherboard to the new drive using only the end connection? Any help is appreciated

I'm not sure exactly what that is but you can maybe try seeing which drive is set as the primary drive? I know with hard drives a PC will flip out if both drives are set as the primary. I will have to see if this falls true for DVD-RW drives as well.

Guys, check out this site. I just hit the jackpot. I know a lot of you buy your computer stuff online like me. Well, this site is in bed with all of the sites that Ive been shopping from. I guess they have an agreement that they will pay their members a percentage back of everything they buy. Must be affiliates or something. Go to TreasureTrooper and then you can link to the websites where you buy your computer hardware & stuff (1-800-4Memory.com, Computers4Sure.com, Cyberguys.com, TechDepot.com, etc.) and you get like 5% back.

Ok idk what to do. I added another of the flat plugs from the motherboard to the new drive so it is hooked up exactly like the other one. However, I still get the same blue screen. I'm lost

Do you get the same blue screen when you leave the drive out? Usually, when I get the "something has changed since last boot" message it just says to use whatever the configuration is now, save it or whatever, and continue. Never got the blue screen for that before.

i had to keep restarting my comp to get my mobo to recognize the drive after long periods of use.

eventually it recognized it and the problem was no more. foxconn intel 865g motherboards, they truly are magnificent (sike)

Agree - set all device jumpers to CSEL and then let the cable decide Been doing that for over 6 years now, and never a problem.

try looking in the BIOS for an AUTO setting. also, check the that drive name shows up properly. i once had a bad cable and the drive name was literlly like curses. 5!@#6 or something like that. i swear! could be a bad cable. when CSEL is set, the plug determains which drive is master and which is slave. it stand for Cable Select. also, try connecting only the new drive without the second.

and i have to say, first time i've seen the rank Dumb Spammer. nice one mods.

In a little while I'll try some of this stuff. I don't think it is a bad cable though, since I tried putting the new drive on the same cable as the old drive, AND a whole seperate drive.

Is it possible it is the drive? Either way, I don't see why it is causing problems, I would think it would just boot and maybe not work.

And for the record if it matters, my motherboard is a epox 9npa+ ultra, and I am using the rounded cables that came with it. Also, I don't need the audio connection correct?

You need the audio connection if you plan on watching any movies or playing CD's.
I have always used an audio cable but i'm not sure if it is needed using onboard sound.

You don't need the audio cable anymore. Windows 2000 and up treat all audio as digital and run it over the IDE cable.

Did you remember to go into the BIOS and set it to Auto, or have tell it to detect the drives? I'm thinking your computer is having a fit because of conflicting messages - IDE controller is saying "hey, new drive here!" but the BIOS is saying "No there isn't!"

Did you set the first drive to master.

When a drive is in by its self, you normally don't use a jumper as the master setting is only with slave present. If you have a jumper on slave on one drive and the other drive has nothing, your BIOS will not know what to do.

As for the CSEL, I tried it on a friends AM2 rig on two optical drives and they were not recognized by the BIOS. I shut it down and changed the jumper settings to master/slave and it worked perfectly. First time I've actually seen it not work, but I did know it can happen.

ok this is quite annoying. I went through microsoft and they didn't help, rather ended up causing more problems so I had to reinstall windows.

So now, I am trying to install the drive again. AGAIN, SAME BLUE SCREEN!

I am beyond going crazy. Could daemon tools/virtual drives have anything to do with this?

I have no idea what else to try...

Your decription is a bit vague. When does this BSOD occur, what is the error code, does it work again if you unplug the new drive. Your jumpers may be screwy as I found out, there are conditional 'slave' and 'master' settings. Is it a power problem maybe? Does it work if you only plug the new drive in leaving it on cable select/primary?
