the BSOD occurs after the windows xp screen with the little scrolling bar on the bottom. sometimes it starts to scroll and then happens, sometimes it happens before. If I unplug the drive, I can boot up fine. Both drives are set at cable select, and BIOS has no problem assigning one to master and the other to slave. The drive opens and closes fine, so I assume there isn't a power problem(or is this not necessarily true?). Not sure about only plugging in the new drive, but I am leaning towards no.

You need to have each DVD burner on different IDE channels. Trying to use them both on the same channel is useless, as you have found out. Take the one that's already configured to be the slave, and move it to the Primary IDE channel, and all of your problems will go away.

so put both on their own cable and set both to primary? I think I might have tried that already, but not 100% sure
