the CPU cooler is connected, I saw the wire and the only socket it can go into, but its not spinning when I turn on the comp. :(

Try turning the connector 180 degrees. Sometimes they can go in either way, and the fan won't spin if you try to power it backwards. :p

It's also possible that this system is designed to have the PSU power this fan. Did your old PSU have a plug that the 3-pin fan connector could plug into? I mean, did you disconnect it from something? If it was plugged into the MB and you didn't touch it, it should still be working just like it was.

Ya I never touched it, so it SHOULD be running :(, *sigh* why did i buy a retail product.....

Weird. It's not stuck, is it (you can spin it by hand?) Does it move at all when you turn on the system? If you can spin it when it's off, does it feel like there's resistance in one direction when it's on?

The only thing I can think of, then, is that either the fan burned out somehow, or that Compaq DOES use a nonstandard PSU.

If you still have the old PSU, does it work with that one plugged in? Why are you replacing it, anyway?

I'm replacing the PSU because it burned out...I would agree, but everything else works except the CPU cooler...so it must be the problem, but it worked fine before :(.

If the PSU burned out, it might well have taken the fan with it -- a PITA to be sure, but easily remedied with a new heatsink for your CPU.

But the fan worked fine even with the burned out PSU. like the whole compran, iz just that PSU didn't give off air like a normal one.

If the PSU worked, it wasn't "burned out".

"didn't give off air"...

The fan broke? I'm confused.

The other thing you could try is to get a 4-pin molex->3-pin fan header adapter (you can get them for a few bucks anywhere that sells computer parts, such as CompUSA, or maybe even Radio Shack), and try plugging it directly into the new PSU. If Compaq *did* use a funny pinout on their PSUs, the new one might just be not powering the fan properly through the motherboard. Although I'd be surprised if the system even POSTed if you didn't have an appropriate PSU.
