Installing a new MOBO and all that without reinstalling OS?

Can it be done? I did it the other night, and had it running for a little bit fine, but after trying to update my vid drivers Win98 wont open in anything but safemode. I am looking for a clean install but am running a SCSI CDrom. I dont know how to boot up to the Win98 reapair install, or to install it over the top of itself.

Well it sounds like your video driver just screwed it up. In safe mode uninstall the video driver, reboot and let it redect. I have done 100's of motherboard swap outs with 95/98/ME w/o any problems. Concider in safe mode deleting all drivers which have to to with the components on any motherboard (both new and old) like IDE drivers, USB, Chipset.. etc. and then let it redtect cause if you don't, Windows will have a bunch of junk trying to load drivers for hardware which isn't there.

I did that and still nothing. I actually even last night deleted EVERYTHING in the device profile so it was empty. Windows reinstalled all of the necessary drivers, and it was back like new within one reboot. It set everything up, but put like dublicates of everything into the device profile in safe mode, but in normal mode it all showed fine. Even with the new display adapters and everything it just wont work. Is there anything I can do short of a full re-install?

It really doesn't work very well in 98. You are likely to have lots of problems.

It works much better with 2k and XP.

yeah, I got XP pro from a friend who does wholesale for really cheap and so I just went with that. Not a prob since, works 100% perfect and now I finally have a clean system too (formatted the boot drive).

After deleting everything in your device manager you may also need to clear the inf folder in windows directory.

I have done it a bunch and as long as you clear it out first I have not had trouble wiht the OS afterwards.

Go to the Anandtech FAQ's page and look up the section on how to ghost your system with sysprep, everything there applys to what you want to do.
it works like a champ, dont go deleting stuff form your windows directory...sheesh!

Actually Sysprep doesn't work at all wint Win98. Only Win2k and WinXP.

Ummm doesn't the windows 98 boot disk have support for SCSI drives. I have used it my my adaptec card and works fine. The are sites on the web you can download the boot disk. just search in google for windows 98 boot disk download.
