the spongy feet are the things that keep you from destroying the core itself. If they weren't there, in many cases, the heatsink doesn't go on quite flush, and there is either poor contact, or it can crack the die fairly easily.
I think it's normal because the heatsinc has to make good contact with the cpu core.Unless you are using a non socket a heatsinc(witch could crush the core and kill the cpu)
I've been having similar troubles. Is the core that small square green thing? And if the heatsink only needs to cool the core, why is the heatsink so large?
Basically, I need help putting the heatsink onto the Duron... thanks..
Leave the 4 pads alone. They help level/stabalize the heatsink. It does take some pressure on the heatsink clip to get it clipped to the socket. Make sure your motherboard is supported on the mobo tray. I used a screwdriver with a large Phillips head to force the clip onto the catch. You will also find this process is much easier if the board is out of the case.
If it's any comfort I had my heatsink on and off my Duron at least 6 times the first day I got them. (Doing the pencil trick.) It does get easier after you do it a couple of times.
